Dear First Grade Families,

This week during our shared reading time we learned to read Flower Garden by Eve Bunting.  We completed a story map, played a word game with short o words, completed a making words lesson, added words to our word wall, and wrote about our favorite part.

In math this week we had our unit 4 checking progress.  These have been graded and returned to you today.  Please continue to practice any concepts your child has not mastered.  The unit 5 letter came home today.  Please read it and keep it as a reference as we go through the unit.  We have begun talking about place value.  We use base-10 blocks to help us make numbers and then figure out the digit in the ones place, tens place, and hundreds place.

Our Good Behavior Ski Day is next week Tuesday, Feb. 9th.  Please be sure your child comes to school dressed to spend the day outside.  Supply them with waterproof gloves or give them two pairs.  Be sure to pack them a lunch.  If your child usually gets hot lunch they will be able to get a sack lunch in the cafeteria before we leave.  If you are bringing your child to school that day be sure they are on time.  We will be at Crystal Mountain for the entire day.  You are welcome to join us!

Our Valentine’s Day party will be the afternoon of Thursday, February 11th.  A class list came home for your child to use when addressing their cards.  Zachary will be bringing us cups, Jade is bringing a drink, and Mrs. VanVoorst will be here to help.  We need healthy snacks to eat so if you are willing to donate anything please let me know.

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

1)      Can you tell me how many tens are in the number 25?  How many ones?

2)      Show me your fact power on the following facts: 2+1=, 2+2=, 2+3=, 2+4=’

Have a nice weekend!

 Sincerely,

  Mrs. Lyman
