Dear First Grade Families,

          This week during shared reading time we learned to read A Color of His Own by Leo Lionni.  We learned a little about chameleons, completed a story map, used a Venn diagram to compare real chameleons with the chameleons in the story, and added new words to our word wall.

          In math this week we rolled dice to make addition facts, learned different ways to write addition facts, learned turn-around and doubles facts, and practiced our fact power.

          We celebrated the 100th day of school on Tuesday!  We made a book with 100 drawings, a book with 100 words, and a crown to wear for the day.

          We completed a health unit this week about alcohol, tobacco, and drugs.  We learned it is never safe to share medicine, or take more medicine than our parents or trusted adult gives us.  We learned about poisons found around the house that we should never eat, drink, smell or touch.  We watched a video about making good choices in regards to drugs and alcohol.

          High-Tech Dental visited us today to talk to us about how to keep our teeth and gums healthy. We also got a free gift to take home.

          I would like to thank those of you who donated to our food pantry.  We got quite a few items.

                    Animal Research Projects are due on Monday.  Please be sure you have helped your child meet all the requirements outlined in the rubric.  Your child will get the chance to share their animal model and talk about their chosen animal.  Next week we will be working on our bare books.  Young Author’s night will be held here at school in April and your child can come read their book on that night.

         Book orders came home today.  Please look them over and if there are books you would like to order please fill-out the form and bring it to school with a check for the books you plan on purchasing.  Please turn in your orders be next week Friday, March 5th.

          February Book-It coupons have come home to you today.  Be sure to praise your reader for the hard work they put in each month as they become more fluent in reading.

          Questions to ask your child this week are the following;

  1. What are the medicine rules?

  2. How can we keep our teeth and gums healthy?

  3. Can you use the following words in a sentence? After, side, by, are

I hope you all have a nice weekend!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lyman
