Dear First
Grade Families,
During shared reading time this week we learned to read The Very
Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. We completed a story map, learned
about the life cycle of a caterpillar, learned about symmetry, and made
a book to determine our understanding of the life cycle.
In
math this week we used animal weights to determine greater than or less
than, we added weights together using base-10 blocks, we used the
weights to solve addition number stories, and we made an addition number
story book.
We
completed a science unit this week about heredity. We completed a
fingerprint activity, we did an activity to learn how genes are passed
on to us from our relatives, and we read and discussed an online book
about animal characteristics. Another part of this life science unit
involves your child doing research and writing a report on an animal.
The animal research project information came home today. Please read
the information and let me know if you have any questions. The project
is due on Monday, March 1st. During that first week of March
your child will work on writing their report information in their bare
books to read during Young Author’s Night in April. |
This afternoon we competed in our Olympic game day. Each classroom
set-up a game outside for us to play. We played the games, drank hot
cocoa and enjoyed the afternoon outside.
Next week’s homework will be exclusively spelling. This will give you
more time to complete the research project.
Questions to ask your child this week are the following:
1)
What is symmetry?
2)
Can you tell me what comes after the pupa stage in the life cycle
of the caterpillar?
3)
Do you have fact power? Test your power with the following
facts: 1+2=, 2+2=, 3+3=, 4+1=, 4+4=
Have a good weekend! If you have
internet access be sure to go online to view our ski day pictures,
Olympic opening ceremonies, Olympic game day, etc.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lyman |
