Dear First Grade Families,
This week
during shared reading we learned to read the traditional story/song
On Top of Spaghetti illustrated by Katherine Tillotson. We learned
new wh, sh, and th words, we completed a story map, and we drew pictures
of our favorite foods.
In math this
week we practiced adding and subtracting on the number line, sorted
dominoes by odd and even numbers of dots, and we practiced counting
coins.
Our next visit
to the Onekama Public Library is Monday, December 14th.
Please return your books by then.
Toys for Tots/Gifts for Teens barrel is located in the office. The
barrel will be picked up on December 14th.
I would like our class to collect personal care items for an Onekama
family in need. Please bring in things like shampoo, bar soap,
toothpaste, deodorant, laundry soap, etc. Other items like tin foil,
saran wrap and garbage bags can also be brought in.
The Christmas Program is scheduled for
Thursday, December 17 at 7 p.m. This year's program is an
old-fashioned Christmas sing. Good school clothes or dressier attire
will be suitable for the students. However, the students will again be
seated on the floor. We will use the risers as a stage for the
singing.

Many students are having a difficult time
following our classroom rules. If you could talk with your student
about the importance of our rules and why we have them I would
appreciate it. Our rules are: be respectful, raise your hand, follow
directions, use kind words, use good manners, and do your best work.
We have completed a health unit this week about
courtesy, how to be helpful, how to be a good listener, and how to solve
problems.
We are starting our Christmas around the world
unit. We will be making our passports tomorrow and throughout the month
of December we will learn about China, Israel, Africa, and Mexico.
Questions to ask your child this week are the
following:
1)
Can you use the following words in a
sentence? Under, when, be, as
2)
What are some words you can use that
show you are curteous?
3)
What three things do you need to do to
be a good listener?
Have fun in the snow this weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lyman
