Dear First Grade Families,

This week during shared reading we learned to read the story George Shrinks by William Joyce. We talked about dreams, wrote about what it would be like to be tiny, completed a making words lesson, compared George Shrinks to There’s an alligator under my bed, and wrote about our favorite part.

In math this week we learned to add three number together, practiced exchanging base ten blocks and adding base ten blocks, and we practiced counting coins to buy items from a store.

Our fieldtrip to the Amber Elk Ranch will be Thursday May 20th. Permission slips have come home today. Please fill them out and return them to school with your payment. It will cost $5.00 for your child to go on the trip. If you would like to join us your cost is $8.00. We are leaving school by about 8:30 and returning by about 1:30. Your child will need their own lunch that day. Please have your money and permission slip turned in by Friday, May 7th.

We got to have gym class with Mr. Bromley I the brand new gym on Tuesday! They even got to run on the indoor track. Please continue sending your child in soft soled gym shoes every Tuesday so we can continue to enjoy the new facility.

Next week is the last week for homework, but please continue practicing math targets, flashcards, sight words, and reading with your child. I will be assigning spelling homework for the last week. May 3rd through 5th I will be giving the 90 word spelling test again to determine your child’s growth in spelling.

Next week Friday, April 30th there will be no school. We have a county-wide in-service.

We have been working at the science station this week. I would still like more items for the kids to observe. If you have anything you think they would enjoy looking at and writing about please bring it in. The science station will be open for about another three weeks.

Our spring sing is scheduled for Tuesday, May 5th at 7:00 pm. I will give you more details when they become available.

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

1)      Can you solve the following problems? 2+1+1=, 4+1+2=, 3+2+2=

2)     What things can we do to help care for the earth?

3)      Can you tell me an ai word? An ay word?

Have a good weekend!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lyman

This spring the Daisy Girl Scouts did a great job cleaning up the area.  Thank you, Girls! (photo below)
