At Hart Wick
Pines we learned about trees, different habits and nature’s animals. In
hart wick Pine we started with a speaker named Bryce. Bryce showed us a
famous tree in hart wick pines, and different types of woodpeckers.
After Bryce was done showing us trees, another speaker came his name was
Aaron. Aaron showed us a logging camp and taught us about different
axes. When Aaron was done he took us back to the vaster center and Mr.
Craig play a games with us that was called animal soup ,it was when you
were blindfolded and Mr. Craig gave you a animal skin and u would have
to guess what it was. After hart Wick Pines we were going home but
before we went home we had McDonalds. That’s what we learned at hart
wick pines. ~Junior
On May 26,2010 the fourth grade class went to
Hartwick Pines. It was a long ride there. The long ride was worth it.
The day was hot! So was the walk! My favorite part of the walk was the
Monarch Tree. The tree is very old! My class and I enjoyed the trip to
Hartwick Pines. ~Hobi
We went to Hartwick
Pines in May 26,2010. When we got there we had to go on a trail with
Bryce and Mr. Craig. The trail is in the Old Growth forest. It was a 1
hour walk. At the first couple of minutes we had to stop and talk about
an animal. Then we saw an Experiment with trees. After that we had to do
two more talks. Then we had to go with Aaron. When we went with Aaron we
went to a logging museum. We talked about using Axes and Saws. We talked
about Axes first. Then he needed two folinters. He picked Ethan and me.
Then we went to another logging museum. When all of us got in there we
talked about how logging men slept. Then we went with Mr. Craig. With
Mr. Craig we played a game. It was called Animal soup. Then we had to
go. Hartwick Pines was fun! ~Nicholas
On May 26th
my class went to Hartwick Pines. The first thing we did was we walked on
a trail called Old Growth Forest. After a few minutes we got to see the
monarch tree. Soon we got to meet Aaron. Aaron talked about the old
times. He took us into the bunk house and we got to lay and feel the
beds. When we were finished in the logging museum we headed towards the
building. When we got back we played a game called Animal Soup. When it
was time to go we went to the gift shop. I got an otter, old fashion
candy, a rock, two candy sticks, and a rock candy. When we left Hartwick
Pines we went to McDonalds. After that we went to school. Also on the
bus Julie and me were playing on our Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSI.
Also we were eating some old fashion candy and rock candy. I had a blast
at Hartwick Pines. ~Sydnee
On May 26,
2010 my class and I went to Hartwick Pines. When we went we learned lots
of things. My favorite part was the bunk house. At the bunk house there
were 12 beds. The people that slept in the bunk house would share the
bed with one other person. So there would be two people to a bed. The
beds were not comfortable because the beds ere made out of straw. Each
man was given two blankets for there bed. The beds were really really
small for two full grown men. The person that got paid was the cook.
There was no talking at the lunch table. You would get 25 minutes to
eat. That’s why there was no talking so you can eat and plus people
specked different languages. The cook was paid two to three dollars a
day and that was really good money back then. If a really good cook was
hired at a camp and she was paid two dollars a day, but if a other camp
if a other wanted her and would pay her three dollars a day she would
want to go the three dollars a day camp. Hartwick Pines was really
fun. ~Zoe
In Hartwick
Pines we did a lot! One of the things we did was go with Mr. Craig. With
him we played a game called Animal Soup. Animal Soup is a game where you
have to guess the animal that is in your hand while blind folded. Even
though I never got picked to go up, it was lots of fun! When James got
picked Mr. Craig gave him a rubber chicken! It was so funny. After that
we went home. Hartwick Pines was so much fun! ~Jeremiah
On May 26th
2010 my class went to Hartwick Pines for a field trip. When we left they
said it would probably be a two hour ride. On the ride there it was
boring so I talked most of the time on till we got there. There was
speaker named Bryce and he would take us for a walk in the forest. When
we where walking he would talk about the habitats of animals in Northern
Michigan. My favorite thing was in the forest. It was the biggest
monarch tree. It was HUGE! Near by the monarch tree was a big rock that
was moved there by a glacier. The rock got rubbed on the ground co hard
that another rock formed in to it. The main thing that was fun was
walking in the woods. On our way back my class stopped at McDonalds for
lunch. When we got back it was 7:30. Hartwick Pines was the best field
trip of the year. ~James |

On May 26th 2010 my class
and I went to Hartwick Pines. When we got to Hartwick Pines we started
walking the first tour guide Bryce. He stopped and talked to us and show
us animal skins. He taught us about the three different kinds of forests
they are the mixed forest, the coniferous forest, and the deciduos
forest. The second tour guide Aarontalked to us about lumber jacks also
known as shanty-boys. He told us how they did their work and what they
did. Aaron showed a log puller called Big Wheels. When we got back to
the visitors center we went into a classroom and played a game called
animal soup. Animal soup is a game where you get blind folded and Mr.
Craig puts an animal skin in your arms and you have to guess what it
was. On the way back to school we went to McDonalds. Hartwick Pines was
fun but tiring. ~Jaylen
On May 26, 2010 my
class and I went to Hartwick Pines. My favorite part was when we played
a game called Animal Soup. We played it with the counselor named Mr.
Craig. He was hilarious! You play by blind folding someone and put an
animal skin or fur in there hands and the person has to guess what kind
of animal it is. When Junior went up he got an opossum. Mr. Craig told
us when an opossum plays dead its brain turns off. He showed us what
happens. It was really funny. He also brought out beaver fur and told us
it eats its own poop during hibernation. I learned a lot at Hartwick
Pines. ~Madison
On May 26 my class
what to Hartwick Pines. When we got to Hartwick Pines we got our
stockperson named Bryce he work at Hartwick Pines for a year. Bryce
showed us how to tall a whietpine from a pine. Now we have Aaron he show
us big wheels that horse had to carry logs from the woods and back. Than
we had Mr. Craig he is the boss for Hartwick Pines . Mr. Craig let us
hear bird calls and we played a game called Animal Soup we have a bland
fold on he gives us a animal and say what animal is it. After that we
want to McDonalds to have dinner. I love Hartwick Pines. ~Ashton
On May 26th
fourth grade went to Hartwick Pines. My favorite part is when we played
animal soup with Mr. Creig. The object of the game is you had to guess
what animal fur you were feeling. I learned how to tell a red pine from
a white pine. The difference is white pine has five needles in a bundle,
bigger and longer pinecones, and white pine’s bark is not scaley. I also
liked when we went to the bunkhouse. The bed’s were itchy and the
mattereses were made of hay! The thing that really seemed strange was
the logger’s could not talk while they ate breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Cook’s get paid the most that seemed strange too. I also enjoyed the
monarch tree. I love Hartwick Pines. ~Julie |
