A Look Back
and Ahead
In
Language Arts this week we worked with the story Arthur’s Pet
Business. We reviewed sequencing by completing a cut-n-paste, worked
on plot by filling in an event map sheet, and worked on our
problem-solving strategies by answering questions from the story. Next
week we will be working with Julius. We will continue with
sequencing, we will get back into real/fantasy, work with plot, and
practice our problem-solving strategies. I am still reading with the
children to get them into guided reading groups. I suspect we will be
starting guided reading the week after next.
In Math we
reviewed telling time on a clock and putting the hands on a clock. We
will continue with telling time next week and beyond, but we will move
on to wrap up unit one. The unit one review will be the week after next
week. We made our flashcards. Please help your child study them 2-4
times per week (as needed) so he/she can move to the next level. Kathy
Zajac or Kathy Cook will try to test each student at least once a week.
When they have their facts memorized, they will be asked to move to the
next level.
We
finished our “Rights and Responsibilities” unit, learning about our
rights and responsibilities in the classroom and we learned a few basic
rights/responsibilities as an American citizen. This unit will flow into
learning about communities.
We did get
to add some words to our spelling dictionaries this week. It usually
takes 2-3 weeks for the bank of words to get large enough to start
having tests. I will definitely put their assignments on the homework
for you to know when this has started…
In the
area of writing, we will focus primarily on writing complete sentences
and writing a main idea with supporting details for the first few
months. This is being done in short mini-lessons and also with our
“Morning Journal”.
