Holiday
Happenings
From Mr. M’s class
Reading
We have a
room full of great readers! Please keep up the good work of reading with
your child. The children have been learning many new reading skills.
When reading with your child at night, please try to incorporate some of
these skills in your discussions:
-predicting
-plot (problem, events, solution)
-cause and effect
We have
begun guided reading on a regular basis also. I will be meeting with
your child 1 to 3 times per week in a small group setting. We will be
practicing decoding skills as well as building comprehension. We will be
starting Literature Circles after the Holiday break.
Writing
We have
been working hard on writing complete sentences, checking for capitals,
end marks, and spelling mistakes. We have also been looking at our
penmanship when working with words. Please feel free to work on
proofreading and penmanship in their work they bring home in the
Thursday folder.
Math
For the
most part, the class has worked hard this year on number sense (counting
on a number line, simple adding/subtracting problems, etc.). We will be
working on counting change in the future, and, continuing to work on
telling time. Please remember that playing “store” is a great activity
that the children still love to do. It is also a great option for game
night on Thursdays. We will be getting into double/triple digit
addition, with and without re-grouping after the holidays. I will send
home some Home Links that go along with those skills to, hopefully, help
you understand them and know when we are working with them. Please
continue to help your child memorize those flashcard facts. The
importance will really shine through when we get into double-digit
adding/subtracting. Thank you for all your help and support so farJ.
Virtual Class
Our class,
along with Mrs. Eichberger’s and Mrs. Cataneses’ classes, will be
participating in a virtual classroom visit from Michigan State
University’s Museum on Thursday, December 3rd. This is a free
program offered by MSU’s Virtual Outreach Program. In the program we
will be learning about adaptation. To wrap up the program we will use
(live) crickets to show our understanding of adaptation.
“Can I
come?” you ask…Absolutely! We would love to have your help and show you
just some of the technological capabilities we have and use here at
school. The program starts at 8:30, the classes will be meeting in the
Distance Learning Lab at around 8:15ish. If you would like to join us be
in the your child’s classroom by 8:15.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
Thank you for coming in to meet with me. Please remember that if you
have
any
concerns or questions, please send a note or call me.
Christmas
Celebration
Again this year, in lieu of a Christmas “Party” we will be attending an
alternate activity. The plan is in the works…The
details will be coming home in a note from the Student Services Office.
As with last year, this is an optional activity for families to
participate in. |
