Mrs. Niederstadt's
Parent Letter

April 17, 2009

Dear Parents,

This past week was a busy week.  We’ve finished the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS). Your child’s results will be mailed to you by the end of the school year.  Also we had parent-teacher conferences last Wednesday.  Thank you for timing out of your busy schedule to meet with me.  I truly enjoy the opportunity to visit with you.

Next week on Wednesday I will be out of the classroom from 8-11 am for a team meeting.  I’ll be back in the classroom for the remainder of the day.  In the afternoon we will help clean up around the school property in honor of Earth Day.  Please send in a pair of work gloves with your child so s/he does not touch the trash directly.

On Thursday we’ve been invited to watch the production of The Wizard of Oz at Brethren High School in the morning.  Please read the attached sheet.  The permission slip does need to be signed and returned back to school.

There is no school on Friday due to a county-wide in-service.

For the next several weeks we will be studying earth science topics: solar energy, weather, and solid earth.  This past week we talked about solar energy.   We discussed the warming of the Earth by the sun as the major source of energy and how the sun’s warming relates to weather, climate, seasons, and the water cycle.  Next week we’ll discuss weather and how it changes from day to day and over the seasons.  We’ll identify tools for observing, recording and predicting weather changes.  The following week we’ll discuss solid earth’s properties of materials and how those properties make materials useful.

Ms. Catanese (Mrs. Lyman) and I are taking our classes on a field trip to Moomer’s Ice Cream in Traverse City on Thursday, May 28th at 9:30 a.m.  We will leave the school at 8:00 a.m.  The tour takes about 1-1/2 hours.  At the end of the tour, each student will receive an ice cream cone.  The Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) will pay for the cost of the bus and driver.  Students are responsible for a fee of $4.00 to receive a guided tour and homemade ice cream in a cup or cone.  Afterwards we will stop at Elberta Park for a sack lunch.  We should return to the school around 2:00 p.m.  You need to send your child’s fee of $4.00 in an envelope with your child’s name on it.   Parents are welcome to attend.  If you’re interested, then you will need to include your fee of $4.00 in your child’s envelope.  Please label the envelope accordingly.   We would prefer cash, but checks can be made out to Moomer’s, if necessary.  If you would like to learn more about Moomer’s, then visit their web site at www.moomers.com
