Mrs. Lyman's Parent Letter

Friday, October 10th, 2008

Dear First Grade Families,

We started guided reading and literacy work stations this week.  Students that are ready met with me in a guided reading group to read stories and practice reading strategies.  They also completed three literacy work stations.  During shared reading we learned to read When this box is full.  We added words to the word wall, made a seasons flip book, wrote about our favorite part and made a fall leaves book.

In math this week we figured out combinations of 10 pennies and talked about units, learned about the calculator, and practiced telling time by the hour on an analog clock.

Homework started this week.  It needs to be completed and the homework sheet needs to be signed each night.  Please be sure you are sitting down with your child and helping them complete each assignment.

Last week Friday we visited the public library.  The books your child checked out are due on Halloween.  You can bring them to school and I will return them or you can return them right to the library.  We will be visiting the public library again on Nov. 7th.

The weather is starting to change.  Please be sure your child is dressed for the weather.  We always go outside for recess unless it is raining.

Last week I sent home a volunteer schedule to those of you available to help in the classroom.  I will need your help on your scheduled day beginning Monday at 8:00. I’m looking forward to having you with us!

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

1)     Can you use the following words in a sentence? For, will, it, is, but, not

2)     Can you tell me something you learned about fire safety on Wednesday?

I wish you all a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lyman
