Dear First Grade Families,
This week we finished our end
of the year spelling assessment! Your child’s test will be sent home
with report cards. A graph will also be included to show your child’s
improvement and class average.
Also enclosed are your child’s
number scrolls. Everyone did a great job on their number scrolls with
several students reaching over 1,000!
This week in science we learned
about Solid Earth. We watched a couple different videos about the Earth
and what it is made of. We have learned about the different layers of
the Earth and the different types of rocks (how they are formed) that
make up our Earth’s crust. The class really enjoyed learning about
different landforms. We also completed an Earth coloring activity. We
will continue learning about Solid Earth next week.
In shared reading we read Something from
Nothing by Phoebe Gilman. We completed a story map, which included
several different problems and solutions. We added new words to our
word wall, completed a making words lesson and completed a class book.
This week in math, we
began unit 9. We have been working a lot with place value,
concentrating on the number grid to help us with our addition and
subtraction.
Spring
pictures were sent home last week. If you wish to purchase the
pictures, please fill out the form and return it to the office or myself
with payment for your order. We will send them back to Lifetouch. The
pictures will be sent back to the school before the end of the year.
Just a friendly
reminder about the money for Moomer’s is due on Friday, May 22nd.
Students are responsible for a fee of $4.00 to receive a guided tour and
cup or cone of their famous homemade ice cream. Please send it in an
envelope with your child’s name on it. Parents are welcome to attend.
If you’re interested, then you will need to include your fee of $4.00 in
your child’s envelope. Please label the envelope accordingly. I would
prefer cash, but checks can be made out to Moomer’s, if necessary. Our
Moomer’s Field Trip is on Thursday, May 28, 2009. Permission slips will
be sent home next week.
Enclosed is a
permission slip for our Buddy Reading Beach Party which is on Friday,
May 22. Please retuned signed as soon as possible! Thank you!
Next week I will be
heading out of state for a couple of days. I will be in school ½ a day
on Wednesday, May 23rd and out of school both Thursday, May
24th and Friday, May 25th. I will return the
following Monday.
Have a fantastic weekend!
Sincerely,
Ms. Catanese
