Dear
First Grade Families,
This week during
shared reading we learned to read There’s an alligator under my bed
by Mercer Mayer. We completed a story map, added words to our word
wall, completed a making words lesson, and we made a class book.
In math this week we continued our geometry unit and we learned about
polygons, practiced drawing a variety of shapes, discussed 3D shapes and
all their properties, and played a coin exchange game.
Young Author’s Night is next week Tuesday, March 24th at
6:00. This is the night when your child is invited to read the book
they wrote about their animal. Please try to bring your child. It is a
wonderful night for your child’s work to be highlighted. It is also
nice to hear students from other classrooms read their books.
Our last week before Spring Break is next week. Spring Break begins
March 30th and runs until April 6th. School
resumes on Tuesday, April 7th. As I mentioned last week, I
will not be returning after spring break. Miss Catanese will be
spending the remaining school year with the students. I leave with no
reservations. I am confident that she will work well with this class.
I would like to thank those of you who scheduled a conference with me.
I appreciated the opportunity to share the progress your child has made. |
Monday, April 13 through Thursday, April 16th your child will
be taking the Iowa Test of the Basic Skills. It will test in the areas
of reading and math. The format is similar to the magazine tests that
we took this year. Please make sure your child gets plenty of rest and
a big healthy breakfast during this week.
Next week is a busy week for March is reading month. On Monday we are
reading the comics. If you get the paper and can send your child in
with the comics section I would appreciate it. On Tuesday they can
bring in their favorite stuffed animal to read with. Thursday is pajama
day. Friday we will have a celebration with ice cream sundaes.
Thank-you for reading at home and turning in the reading slips. It is
wonderful to know that your child is reading so much!
Questions to ask your child this week are the following:
1)
Can you tell me a
word that has two vowels in the middle? Can you use that word in a
sentence?
2)
Can you find the
following 3D shapes in our house? Rectangular prism, cylinder, sphere,
cube
Have a great weekend! It is starting to warm up a little. Hopefully
springtime is near!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lyman |
