Dear First
Grade Families,
This week during our shared reading time we learned to read the story
Flower Garden. We added new words to the word wall, we practiced
reading and putting short e and short o words in sentences, we played a
rhyming word game, we learned about the –ing ending, and we wrote
about our favorite part of the story.
In math this week we played a dice sum game, practiced writing and
solving comparison and more than/less than number stories, and we
learned and practiced solving turn-around facts.
During our writing time I introduced graphic organizers. This is a way
for students to think about their writing and get it organized before
they write. So far, we are working on the same topic and we are
completing the graphic organizer and writing together. In a couple
weeks I will have them begin working on their own and they will receive
a grade for their writing just like their other work. Three samples of
their writing came home today. They are very excited about being able
to write five or more sentences!
We have a new student! Her name is Savannah. She has come to us from
Holland, Michigan. We are so happy to have her as a part of our class!
She fits in very nicely.
During the month of February our class is in charge of donating
non-perishable items to the food pantry. If you have anything you want
to donate, please bring it in! Our class donates the entire month of
February so please try to help out our food pantry. More and more
people are in need during these tough economic times. |
Our Good Behavior Ski Day is
next week Tuesday, February 10th. Please be sure your child
has a lunch on that day. If they receive free hot lunch they will be
able to get a sack lunch from the cafeteria before we leave in the
morning. Be sure to dress them in many warm layers so they can be out
on the slopes for the day. Anyone is welcome to come and help!
Thank-you to those that have already signed up to spend the day with us!
Our Valentine’s Day party will
be on Friday, Jan. 13th from 2-3 in the afternoon. Hanna,
Kolin, and Sydnee are bringing a snack. Mrs. Neph and Mrs. Laurencelle
are coming in to help. Kylie is bringing napkins and a drink. I still
need cups and plates. If you are willing to bring these items I would
really appreciate it. A class list has come home today to help your
child while they are making their valentines.
New math facts came home
today. Please practice these with your child during math homework night
on Tuesday’s.
Questions to ask your child
this week are the following:
1) Can you use the following
words in a sentence? Because, look, great, us, get, and their.
2) Can you tell me the turn
around fact for the following number sentences? 1+2=, 3+2=, 4+3=, 5+2=
Enjoy the weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lyman
