Mrs. Lyman's Parent Letter

Dear First Grade Families,

This has been a very busy week spent preparing for Christmas. Due to the recent snow days we were unable to complete the entire Christmas around the world unit. I wanted to be sure the students made a couple nice gifts this week to give to you for Christmas. Today we enjoyed listening to and acting out my favorite Christmas story, The Polar Express, by Chris VanAllsburg.

The high school students from Mrs. Torrey's English class brought their books to give to the kids on Monday. They all turned out so nice!! This is such a special book for your child and family to cherish. Yesterday we took some time out of our day to make them thank-you cards.

Tomorrow morning we will be doing an activity in the distance learning room. We will be getting online with a woman from the Milwaukee Public museum. She will be reading us a story called The Christmas Tree Ship and we will make an ornament to help us retell the story.

Tomorrow we will go to the Rockin R Stables. Please be sure your child has a sack lunch. If they qualify for free and reduced lunch there will be sack lunches here at school available to them. Also, be sure they are dressed warmly. Provide them with extra layers and an extra set of gloves/mittens. Anyone is welcome to join us. We are leaving school at 10:00 and will be there by 10:30. We will be leaving for the day at 1:30 and back at school by 2:00.
When we get back from vacation we will begin our spelling unit. Each student will be tested on 90 words that first graders need to know how to spell. Once the test is complete, the words students get incorrect will be their spelling words. They will get 6 spelling words to study each week and every Friday they will take a test on those 6 words.
I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and happy new year! I would also like to thank all my volunteers that come in each week. I really appreciate your help! Take care, everyone!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lyman
