Dear
First Grade Families,
This past week was a busy week. We’ve finished with the
Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS). Your
child’s results will be mailed to you by the end of the school year.
In
shared reading we read George Shrinks by William Joyce. This was
a fun story as we practiced making inferences about several of the
stories events. We worked on words that have double vowels (example:
eat, cream, George). The students were able to come up with several
examples. We added new words to the word wall (all had double vowels),
and completed a making words lesson.
In Math we continued to work with coins and base-10 blocks. We bought
and sold items from our classroom store poster. We learned how to make
and count change. We also used our mini chalk boards to learn about
equal halves, thirds and quarters.
Next week we will begin our science unit. We will be learning about
solar energy, solid earth and weather.
On
Thursday we’ve been invited to watch the production of The Wizard of Oz
at Brethren High School in the morning. A permission slip was sent home
on Monday, April 14. The permission slip needs to be signed and
returned to the school.
During the
afternoon on Thursday, April 23, we will be walking to the Onekama
Public Library. |
Mrs. N and I are taking our
classes on a field trip to Moomer’s Ice Cream in Traverse City on
Thursday, May 28th at 9:30 a.m. We will leave the school at
8:00 a.m. The tour takes about 1-1/2 hours. At the end of the tour,
each student will receive an ice cream cone. The Parent-Teacher
Organization (PTO) will pay for the cost of the bus and driver.
Students are responsible for a fee of $4.00 to receive a guided tour and
a homemade ice cream cone. Afterwards we will stop at Elberta Park for
a sack lunch. We should return to the school around 2:00 p.m. You need
to send your child’s fee of $4.00 in an envelope with your child’s name
on it. Parents are welcome to attend. If you’re interested, then you
will need to include your fee of $4.00 in your child’s envelope. Please
label the envelope accordingly. We would prefer cash, but checks can
be made out to Moomer’s, if necessary. If you would like to learn more
about Moomer’s, you can visit their web site at
www.moomers.com .
Homework will be starting back
up next week, Monday, April 20.
There is no school Friday,
April 25, 2009 due to a county-wide in-service.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Sarah Catanese
