Ms. Eichberger’s Class -  Weekly Information – Oct. 3, 2008

LANGUAGE/ASSESSMENT

Thank you for providing the students with supplies for our building project.

The students were enthralled with this activity.  From designing the building, to problem solving to cooperatively working together, this project gave me the whole picture as to how each of the student learns.  I will use this project as my main assessment in next week’s mid-quarter report.  These progress reports will go home next Thursday, Oct. 9.

Next week we will focus on our written reports for this project.  In our writings we will work towards staying focused, supporting our ideas with examples and details, use a variety of words, phrases, and sentences, spelling and punctuation.

FIELD TRIPS

  • The second graders will be touring Historic Sites of Onekama on Thursday, Oct. 9.

  • Permission slips have gone home.

  • The third graders will be going to the Manistee River Weir on Friday, Oct. 10.

  • Permission slips went home today.

Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP)

All third grade students will be tested in Language Arts and Mathematics from Oct. 14 – Oct. 23.  There will be six days of testing total.   The Michigan Department of Education website if www.michigan.gov/mde   Here, you will find various information regarding the MEAP, however the document, DESIGN AND VALIDITY OF THE MEAP,  in which you would the most answers to your questions, is currently under revision.  To receive an emailed copy of this unrevised document, you may contact Bill Brown, the MEAP Test Development Coordinator.  His number is 517-335-0568.  There toll free number is 877-560-8378.

HOMEWORK POLICIES

The more that you read,
the more things you will know.
The more that you learn,
the more places you'll go.
~ Dr. Seuss ~

As of now, the only homework that I will be giving will be spelling test words.  Spelling tests will begin AFTER the MEAP.  I will periodically suggest readings and have your child read them to you.  The one thing that is strongly encouraged is to read with your child, and model reading yourself. When a child sees his parent read, they will become a reader.  If the parent is never seen reading, the child will NOT become a reader, and when they do learn to read, the self-motivation will only be kept aflame, if they see you read.   If you do not already have a library card, and use it, it is suggested that annual trips to the library be a part of your family routine.

SNACKS

The students are growing in here!  They love to eat!  Some of them beg me for food.  Sometimes I have leftovers from my lunch, and given them to the hungry students. Ask your child if they are hungry during the school day, and if they are, please provide them with more snacks.
