Three
Cups of Tea
I would like
to add one more book to our January literature list. It is
Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortensen and David Oliver
Relin. The book is based on the #1 New York Times Best
Seller. It is the story of Greg Mortensen who attempted to
climb K2, the world’s second highest mountain. He got lost
and wandered into a poor village, where the chief and the
village people took him in. Moved by their kindness he
promised to return and build a school for the village’s
children. Over the next decade Mortensen built over sixty
schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. He has endured many
trials and more to dedicate his life to building literacy
and peace, one child at a time.
There is
also a picture book version of the story with illustrations
by Susan L. Roth.
Both books
are available now at local bookstores and online retailers.
I had the pleasure of hearing Mortensen speak in Traverse
City on Tuesday evening. His story is incredible and highly
motivating.
Historic
Presidential Inauguration
On Tuesday,
January 20, we will take part in a re-enactment of the
Presidential Inauguration. Following the live
television event, we will also have our own version of an
Inaugural Ball. Families are welcome to attend these
events in our classroom. We will begin our reenactment
around 9:00 AM. Our students will be impersonating the
outgoing President, newly-elected President, former First
Lady, new First Lady, Justice of the Peace, guards,
musicians, dignitaries, and onlookers. The Inauguration
will be televised at Noon followed by the Inaugural
Parade. Our Ball will take place in the afternoon. It
is suggested that the children dress in “formal
attire” for the Ball. This could include a button down
shirt, tie, and trousers for boys, and a dress or skirt and
blouse for girls. Punch and cookies will be served with
dancing to follow.
