Manistee - an Indian name meaning "wind blowing through the trees".

Onekama - Indian name for "a place of great beauty"

Arcadia  - Greek for "beautiful valley"

Bear Lake - Russell Smith named this town for the lake that was shaped like a bear.

Brethren - Samuel Thorpe, a German minister, named this town.

Kaleva - Finnish settlers named this town after the epic poem, the Kalevala, a story about the Finnish people's desire for freedom.

Wellston - Named for Adelmer Wells, the town's first postmaster
