On May
6, 2009 Onekama’s fourth grade class went to Hartwick Pines. When we got
there we ate lunch on the bus because we were behind schedule. After
lunch we went on a forest tour though the forest. I saw 4 red squirrels,
5 gray squirrels, 7 chipmunks, and 15 birds. Then when we got done with
the forest tour we had a lumbering tour. We went through two museums and
got to see what a shanty boy or lumberjack did. The last thing we did
there was play a game it was called animal soup you have to try and
guess what animal part you were holding. I got to touch a snake not a
live one just a dead snake body. There was also a gift shop so after the
game we went to the gift shop I bought a bouncy ball it had a blue snake
in it. When we left Hartwick Pines we went to McDonald’s we ate there
and then came home by the time we got home it was already 6:30. Thanks!

touch the skins. Ms. Dale showed us the monarch tree it was about 150
feet high the top of the tree snapped off by wind. Ms, Dale showed us
the white pine tree. Mr. Rob did the tour of the lumberjacks. Mr. Rob

axe had two blades, and when one side of the axe went dull you can use
the other side. Then we went to the shanty boy cabin. At the end of the
tour we played Animal Soup or Skins and Skills. At the end we went to
McDonalds. Our class had a great time at Hardwick Pines. ~by McKayla

On May
6, 2009 the fourth grade went to Hartwick Pines. We went on a beautiful,
sunny day. It took us two hours to get there. Hartwick Pines is located
by Grayling. When we got there we had to eat on the bus because we were
late. Our tour started at 12:30. For our tour we had to hike a trail
with our tour guide Ms. Dale and a training student, Ms. Rachel. She
showed us two birds and a bat. The first bird she showed us was a
woodpecker. The second bird she showed us was an owl. The bat was a
little brown bat. The woodpecker was a primary nester and the owl was a
secondary nester. The first trees we saw were in a deciduous forest
that was 100 years old. We also saw an enormous tree that had been
knocked over by a huge windstorm. It was called a monarch tree because
it was so big. The tree was 160 feet tall before it had been knocked
over! We also went to a logging museum where our tour guide was Mr. Rob.
He told us what it would be like if we were shanty boys that lived in a
bunkhouse. He also showed us different things used to cut down trees.
After we were done with our tours we got to play a game called Animal
Soup where a man named Mr. Craig would put a blind fold on us and he
would place an animal skin or part in our hands and we would try to
guess what it was. After that we got on the bus and ate at McDonald’s.
When we were done eating we headed home. Hartwick Pines was one of the
most amazing field trips ever!

On May 6, 2009 the
fourth graders went to Hartwick Pines. Once we got there we met our tour
guides. There names are Ms. Rachel and Ms. Dale. They told us some stuff
and then we went on the trail. That was fun. When we got back we went to
a game called Animal Soup skins and skulls. What you had to do was put
on a blind fold on you and Mr.Craig put an animal in our hands and you
would feel it and guess the animal. I did the game and I guessed the
animal on my second guess and I got it right. My first guess was a bear
but it really was a wolf, that was my second guess. On the ride home we
stopped at McDonald`s. Thank you PTO for paying for me and my classes
meal. ~by Kassidy

really neat lumbering tour .Then the third tour was really fun because

Fourth
grade went to Hartwick Pines on May, 6. Hartwick Pines is in Grayling
Mi. At Hartwick Pines they talk about how the loggers had moved the
logs and what tree they were after and so on. There was this lady that
donated over 8,000 acres of land to Michigan. The lady’s name was Karen
Hartwick. They named Hartwick Pines after Karen Hartwick. She donated
all that land for her loss of her husband. Our class had two tour guides
there names are Ms. Rachel and Ms. Dale. Ms. Rachel told us how the
animals made there home and where they would nest. Ms. Dale told us what
kind of animals nested in trees or holes. Also Ms. Dale had some of the
birds that she told us about and some of the mammals she told us about.
The animals that Ms.Dale had were know longer with us. Then we went to
this other tour guide his name was Mr. Rob. Mr. Rob told us about how
the loggers got the wood to the places they wanted it to be. Mr. Rob
says that the loggers send the logs down the Au Suble River or the
Manistee River if they want to get the logs some where way far away. The
thing the shanty boys have to do is they have to wait till winter to
putt the logs on the ice so it will be easy for the horses to pull or
the horses will be swimming. So when the loggers or shanty boys putt the
logs in the winter the water will just melt then the logs will just
float with the shanty boys on them. Then there was this wheel that they
called the big wheel. The big wheel also had a nickname it was called
just kill me all ready. The shanty boys are the ones that do all the
work. The cookees are the ones that cook all there food and give them
fresh blankets sometimes. Sometimes there are horses that pull the wood
on a wagon. There are sometimes 4 horses. Two are for work and the other
are for back up for if one gets hurt. The horses pull the big wheel. Did
you know the shanty boys clean there self after TWO WEEKS? Plus they
only have two pares of close to were all summer and winter! They were
there cloth for two weeks without cleaning them. We had lots of fun at
Hartwick Pines. ~by Taler B.
