On May 6th, 2009 Mrs. Bennett’s fourth graders went to Hartwick Pines. On the way up there it took about 2 hours. When we got there our first two leaders were Mrs. Dale and Mrs. Rachel. They lead us around the place talking about how old the forest was. Some of the forest was really old. The oldest one was about 300 years old. One of the trees upper part snapped because lighting struck it. In the old forest there was no plants on the ground except big trees. In the younger forest there were plants. Then the trail was over. So Mrs. Dale went back but Mrs. Rachel stayed because she’s a student teacher. Then our lumbering teacher was Mr. Rob. He showed us how the people lumbered back then. One way they lumbered was they had two handed saws. Mr. Rob picked Matt and Grace for being the lumber people. Then Austin was a tree. Matt and Grace were pulling back and forth portending to cut Austin down. When Mr. Rob was done Mr. Craig played animal soup with us. Animal soup is where you are blind folded then Mr. Craig puts an animal foot or something in your arms then you guess what it is. On our way back we got to the school at 6: 32.pm. Our class had a long day at Hartwick Pines. ~ by April

Once we got on the trail it was almost silent. The first interesting thing was this tree that got struck by lighting recently. The tree had so much moisture in it when it got hit it nearly exploded into big long chunks! When we were walking I saw something move but it was just a Blue Jay. The sixth thing that was interesting was a humungous tree that it’s top snapped off in a wind storm. Then we saw an old chapel in the woods. After that we went into the lumbering tour with Mr. Rob. They used big hokes and lift them up on to the sled. Then after he was done talking we went to play a game called Animal Soup Skins and Skulls. It was a fun game. You had to feel there tail if they had one and then you had to stretch it out and see how big it was. The last animal was gorse. It was a snake.          Fourth grade went to Hartwick Pines on May, 6. Hartwick Pines is in Grayling Mi.  At Hartwick Pines they talk about how the loggers had moved the logs and what tree they were after and so on.  There was this lady that donated over 8,000 acres of land to Michigan. The lady’s name was Karen Hartwick. They named Hartwick Pines after Karen Hartwick.  She donated all that land for her loss of her husband. Our class had two tour guides there names are Ms. Rachel and Ms. Dale. Ms. Rachel told us how the animals made there home and where they would nest. Ms. Dale told us what kind of animals nested in trees or holes. Also Ms. Dale had some of the birds that she told us about and some of the mammals she told us about. The animals that Ms.Dale had were know longer with us. Then we went to this other tour guide his name was Mr. Rob. Mr. Rob told us about how the loggers got the wood to the places they wanted it to be. Mr. Rob says that the loggers send the logs down the Au Suble River or the Manistee River if they want to get the logs some where way far away. The thing the shanty boys have to do is they have to wait till winter to putt the logs on the ice so it will be easy for the horses to pull or the horses will be swimming. So when the loggers or shanty boys putt the logs in the winter the water will just melt then the logs will just float with the shanty boys on them.  Then there was this wheel that they called the big wheel. The big wheel also had a nickname it was called just kill me all ready.  The shanty boys are the ones that do all the work. The cookees are the ones that cook all there food and give them fresh blankets sometimes. Sometimes there are horses that pull the wood on a wagon. There are sometimes 4 horses. Two are for work and the other are for back up for if one gets hurt. The horses pull the big wheel. Did you know the shanty boys clean there self after TWO WEEKS?  Plus they only have two pares of close to were all summer and winter! They were there cloth for two weeks without cleaning them. We had lots of fun at Hartwick Pines. ~by Taler B.

We learned about how trees get destroyed, how animals make there homes in trees, how you can tell the differences from a red pine tree and a white pin tree, and a bunch of other stuff. Then we got a tour with Mr. Rob about how lumberjacks live. He showed us a shanty bunk house and told us what shanty boys did in it. Mr. Rob also told us about what the cooks did. We learned that the cooks are the most important people in a lumbering camp. After that we met a man named Mr. Craig who taught us how to play animal soup. First he put a blind fold on someone. Then he put an animal skin in your hand and you had to guess what it was. Once you guessed correct he would take off the blind fold and tell a story about the animal. Then we went back to the school. Hartwick Pines was a really fun field trip. ~Jarrod
