Writing, Reading, & Listening

Fifth grade students in Mrs. Bennett's Language Class were asked to write in their journals on the topic "Helping Others".  After each had finished they took turns reading their essay to the class. (Listening is important too!) Students were encouraged in this writing to pay attention to "voice".

When I help others it makes me feel good. People always helped me so I thought it was time to help them. My friend SaDee and I started a dog sitting business every Monday. We told them that it was 50 cents a dog. On the first day we got at least three dogs! SaDee and I decided we would give the money to Africa because every 30 seconds someone dies of malaria! When I heard that I almost bursted into tears.  I know my mom did. On the first day SaDee and I picked up the dogs and gave the dogs a bath. After we brushed them it was tiring because they kept trying to chase my cats. Then we took them for a walk. It was awesome! While we were walking them a squirrel, a huge squirrel, jumped in front of us. SaDee and I was so startled that we let go of the leashes. The dogs ran off. It took one hour to find them. When we got back to my house we tied them up by a shady tree and they fell asleep. Their owners picked the dogs up and by the end of the summer we had $17.00. I know that's not much but it probably made a big difference in someone's life. Helping others is a good thing to do  and I am glad I did it.

I joined Safety Patrol because I wanted to help others. I thought it would feel good to help others. Safety Patrol is when you help like keeping people safe. I like being top because you can yell to the other Safety Patrolers so they can do their job. I started practicing in the fourth grade. After we go inside it feels good that you kept all those kids safe. The safety Patrol helps others even when it's cold. and raining and snowing outside. It wouldn't feel good if a kid got hit by a bus. That's why the Safety Patrol has to pay attention. My favorite position is crosswalk because you block the people to keep them from getting hit by a bus. I don't think that the people like waiting when there's a lot of buses coming in. The best part about being Safety Patrol is that you get to help others and it feels really good. I'm still in Safety Patrol and I want to stay in for a long time because it's exciting.

I like helping my family. One person I helped was my Grandpa John. He lost, well our family lost, a really nice person. Her name was Tina Lee Potter. She was the best person I've ever met. After he death she gave my family, well, from what I know, my grandpa and me signs. I helped him with, well with getting started again. Where she died was at my grandpa's house. The hard part my grandpa and I will never forget is that she died right in his lap. He told me that. My grandma Tina (I call her grandma) well she died of cancer. Now ever since her death I donate all the change I get to cancer boxes at the takeout places. She died October 28, 2008. My grandpa and me still cry sometimes. He wrote a book about her. It has all of the signs she gave us in it. He's still got her pictures. He hung them all over the place. I have one too. It is on my dresser by my Bible and her face is on some angel wings. How I helped him was because he couldn't let go. I was fun, and in a way scary from the signs, helping my grandpa.
