Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman plead a big part in African American history. Harriet was born in 1820 and died in 1913. She was marred to John Tubman. She was a slave daring the Civil war. She ran plantation that she had called home for sixteen years. She ran north to Pennsylvania. Over the next 9 years she made more then 16 dangerous trips and freed more then 300 slaves, including her family like her dad and bother. She lived to be an old age and she was brave witch in not common in slaves. Harriet was a grate person.

Louis Armstrong

          Louis Armstrong played a role in African American history. His full name is Daniel Louis Armstrong and his nickname is Satchmo because his mouth like a satchel. He was born on August 4, 1901, New Orleans, Louisiana and died July 6, 1971.His occupation is that Louis Armstrong was a well know cornet player in clubs and in river boats by the Mississippi river.  He once be came a world for his famous fantastic musical talent. Louis  Armstrong’s role in African American history is that he was a famous jazz trumpet player and he also sang scat . Two interesting about him is that he celebrated his birthday on July 4 but it was on August 4. He also had many recordings, television shows, and movies. 

            

Sojourner Truth

          Isabella Baumfree played a very brave part in African American history. She was also known as ‘Sojourner Truth’. She was born in 1797 at New York State. She had five children. Isabella and her children were all enslaved.

          In 1827, Isabella escaped from her master who heartlessly sold all five of her children. After escaping from her master, Sojourner campaigned for women’s rights. One interesting thing fact about her was that she also got one of her children back during her campaign. Another interesting fact about her is that her new last name was Truth because she was to never tell a lie. She died in 1883. Those are things that make Sojourner Truth so interesting.

Oprah Winfrey

Many people play important roles in African American history. Oprah is one of them. She was born on January 29, and is known for her talk show, her generosity, and how she teaches others to do the same. Such as her new experiment “The Big Give”. Also for the school she has in Africa. Oprah had a very short education herself. She started college and then dropped out because she was offered a well paid job as a newsreader. Oprah is not married but has a boyfriend that she has known for a long time, named Stedman Gram. There are also some interesting facts about her. Some of the facts are that her production company, Harpo, is really Oprah spelled backwards. Another fact is that Oprah’s real name is Orpah, but people kept mixing up the “p” and the “r” so much that she changed it to Oprah. Also in the new Bee movie she played the voice of Judge Bumbledon. She has a really busy life, and has a big role in African American history.

 

 

Elijah McCoy

Elijah McCoy played an important part in African American history. Elijah McCoy was born it the month of May 2, 1843. He died in Detroit October 10, 1929. He had married Ann Elizabeth Stewart. Then tragedy struck. Ann had passed away in 1868. Then Elijah married Mary Eleanor Delaney. For his job he was a fireman. His role in African American was that he was an Afro-Canadian inventor and engineer. Here are a few interesting facts. He was an inventor. He was also an engineer and a fireman. He was 86 years old when he died.

     

Tyra Lynne Banks

 

Tyra Banks plays a role in African American history. Tyra’s full name is Tyra Lynne Banks. Tyra also is called T. Banks. Tyra was born on December 4th 1997 in Inglewood, California. She is still alive and doing well. Tyra was six years old when her parents got a divorce. She has one brother Devin Banks. After Tyra was done with school she was accepted to Loyola Marymount University. Tyra didn’t go to the University. Instead she went to Paris and fulfilled her dream to become a model. Tyra now is a talk show host, actress, singer, and famous super model. Mrs. Banks played an important role in African American history. She is one of four African American also seven woman to have ranked the world’s most famous people by Time magazine. Tyra was the first African American to be on the covers of the GQ Sports Illustrated. Banks began modeling at the age of 15 years old. Tyra’s first big screen role was in 1994. She has co-starred in Higher Learning. Tyra has co-starred in a lot of shows and movies. Banks has even been in music videos she has been with a lot of other famous people to like Tina Turner. Banks did retire from modeling in May 2005. She is still famous by doing TV shows, music, and talk shows. Tyra Lynne Banks played a great role in African American history.

 

Jesse Clevend Owens

Jesse Owens was the world fastest African American in the world. Jesse Owens was known as Buckeye Bullet. He called himself J.C. He was born on September 13 1913 Alabama. He died March 13 1980. He did go to school in East Technical high school. He did go to college at Ohio state university. He had a job as a shoe repair person. Jesse was a slave when he was a kid. Jesse founded running was his thing when he was a slave he would not walk he would run.

 

James Earl Jones

          James Earl Jones is an interesting person in African American history. James Earl Jones was born in Arkabutla, Mississippi. He is still alive, and he lives in New York. His grandparents raised him because his parents got a divorce before he was born. James Earl Jones went to the University of Michigan, but he left without a degree. He is a very famous African American actor. Jones is most famous for his deep voice. He played the voice of Darth Vader in the Star Wars movies. James Earl Jones was also in the movie The Lion King as the voice of Mufassa ( Simba’s dad). Jones started out at The Ramesdale Theater in Manistee when he was only a kid. He even won two Tony awards, three Emmys, a Grammy, and an Oscar nomination. James Earl Jones is an important person in African American history.

 

Madam C.J. Walker

          Madam C.J. Walker is very popular in African American history. Although she goes by the name Madam C.J. Walker, her birth name is Sarah Breedlove. She was born on December 23, 1867 Delta, Louisiana. Her parents were Minerva and Owen Breedlove. Most African Americans didn’t go to school, they worked, so her mother, along with teaching her how to work, taught her almost everything she knew. When Walker was about six years old, both of her parents died. When she was 14, she married Moses McWilliams to escape the abuse of her brother-in-law, Jesse Powell. A while later, her adopted parents had a baby named A’Lelia Walker. Two years later, Madam C.J. Walker’s husband died. A long while after that, she married Charles Joseph Walker. He helped her get a job. She was an entrepreneur, a philanthropist, and a social activist. Therefore, she became one of the first African American woman millionaires. In the 1890’s she suffered from scalp ailment which caused her to loose her hair. Madam C.J. Walker experimented with her hair for a long time and then, she finally made her hair care product called ‘Madam Walker’s Wonderful Hair Grower’. Many people think she invented the straightening comb, but that is NOT true. Sadly, her hair products aren’t sold anymore. When she was 50 years old, in 1917, a white mob came and killed over 40 African Americans, but thankfully, she was on an interview. Then, two years later, in 1919, she died. Poor Madam Walker died, but she is resting in peace.

 

Jack Roosevelt Robinson

Jackie Robinson played a major role in African-American history. Jack Roosevelt Robinson known as Jackie was born January 31, 1919 in Cairo, GA. He died October 24, 1972 in Stamford, CT. Jackie went to college at UCLA (University of California in Las Angeles). Then he went on to play ball in the majors for the Brooklyn Dodgers. His role in African-American history was that he was the first African-American in the MLB. That is the best way to show young African-Americans how much they can do. Did you know that he played football for some weird league. He also was in the World War 2 as a lieutenant. Jackie Robinson played a great role in African-American history.

 

Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey Douglass

          Frederick Douglass was a famous African American. Frederick’s full name is Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey Douglass. Frederick’s original name was Frederick Washington Bailey. A lot of people knew him as the “Sage of Anacostia” or as the “Lion of Anacostia”. Mr. Douglass was born on February 7th, 1818 in Talbort County located in Maryland. He died at the age of 77 on February 20th, 1885 in Washington D.C. Frederick was born to slaves. His mom was black and his dad was white. Frederick never knew his own father. Mr. Douglass also left his mother at a very early age. After leaving his mom, he was raised by his grandmother. Young Frederick was taught to read by a man’s wife that he worked for. When he got older his main job was an American abolitionist. He also was an editor, orato, author, statesman, and, don’t forget, a reformer. Mr. Douglass fought for slavery women’s rights. He was against slavery and Douglass was a very firm believer in equality. He lectured a lot about his thoughts against slavery in Great Britain and in the United Sates. Frederick met with Abraham Lincoln during the war. When they met they discussed President Lincoln’s efforts to stop slavery. Mr. Douglass later started an anti-slavery newspaper called The North Star. The newspaper was published until 1860. Frederick was one of the most outstanding figures in African American history. He was once an assistant secretary of Santo Domingo Commission. He soon became a Marshall in 1887-1881. He also recorded deeds for five years in Washington D.C. The last governmental thing he did was a US minister and also a concil general to Haiti for a little more than two years. There is an autobiography of Frederick Douglass’s life. The book is called “Life and Times of Frederick Douglass”. The book was published in 1882. Frederick Douglass is an interesting person.

 

Barbara Jordan

          Barbara Jordan played a great role in African American History. Barbara was known as Barb. She was born on February 21,1936. Barbara Jordan was born in the Fifth Ward of Houston. She died on January 17,1996 in the hospital because of complications. For most of her life she was a congresswoman. Her role in a African American History was to be the first congresswoman. She served Texas for six years. Barbara taught political science at Tuskgee Institute in Alabama for one year before she went back to Houston. In 1956,she graduated from Texas Southern with a double major in science and history. She played a good part in African American History.

 

George Washington Carver

George Washington Carver was very important to African American History in African American History. George Washington Carver was born in 1864 on July 12 at Diamond Grove, Missouri. George Carver was known to Time magazine as Black Leonardo. George Carver began his life as a slave but later on in his life he made products out of peanuts that was his occupation. George Carver’s role in African American History was he made products out peanuts and sweet potatoes, pecans, and soybeans. The Products that carver invented was the rubber substitute, foodstuffs, dyes, pigments, and many other products. Two interesting facts about George Washington Carver are he made hundreds of products out of peanuts. He also donated all his savings to Carver Institute for research. He was never married and he didn’t have children but he sure had a huge family. His family was Harriet A., Mary Ann, Pheby, Nancy O., John W., Lorenzo Jackson, Sarah, Cynthia, Lucy Belle, George Washington Jr., and Thomas Jefferson. George Washington Carver died in 1943 on January 5, in Tuskegee, Alabama.  Those are the reasons he is so important to African American History and why he is even in African American History.

 

Michael Jordan

    Michael Jordan played a role in African American History. Michael Jordan’s full name is Michael Jeffery Jordan. He was also known as Air Jordan, His Airness, and MJ. Michael was born on February 17, 1963, in Brooklyn New York. Michael Jordan has not died yet luckily. Michael’s wife’s name is Junta Vane Jordan. He also has three kids. There names are Jeffery, Marcus, and Jasmine. Jeffery was born in 1988. Marcus was born in 1990. Jasmine was born in 1992. MJ went to University of North Carolina. For 19 years his job was playing in NBA. He played NBA from 1984 to 2003. Michael didn’t have a big role in African American History, but he was one of the best African American basketball player ever. Some interesting facts about Michael is he was rookie of the year in 1985. He was also three time in a row All Star MVP. This is Michael Jordan’s role in African American History.

 

Earvan (Magic) Johnson

Earvin Johnson had a huge roll in NBA history and in African American history.  His real name was Earvan Johnson But he was known as Magic Johnson.  He was born in Lansing MI in Augest 14 1959.  He was married to Erthli Kelley and had one child.  His education was going to Michigan state university.  His occupation was playing basketball. His role in African Amercan history that he  was a black player history, he was also the best black player in African Amercan history.  A couple of interisteing facts are that he went to the Olympics and won a gold medal.


 Sarah E. Goode

Sarah E. Goode Played a unique part in African American history.  She was born into slavery in 1850.  Her birthplace was a trading post in New York City.  You May have guessed, that was a bad time for African Americans.  Sarah died in 1921.  She had no proper education what so ever, but that did not stop her from becoming an inventor.  It must have been hard to become an inventor without proper education.  She owned a furniture shop in Chicago, Illinois. Role in African American history was to become the first African American Woman inventor to receive a U.S. patent.  This gave other African American inventors inspiration to patent their inventions.  Two interesting facts about Sarah E. Goode are: 1.The invention that she patented was the cabinet bed or the “Hide away bed”. It looked like a cabinet or desk but folded out into a bed.  It was patented on July, 14 1885.2.She sold her invention in her shop in 1886 when she put it up for sale.  The most important thing is that she played a unique part in African American history.

Garrett Augustus Morgan was a African-American and played a part in African-American history. Garrett A Morgan was born in Paris, Kentucky  on march , 4 ,1877 and died on August , 27, 1963 in Cincinnati , Ohio. Garrett A Morgan was a business man and  was an inventor. He made the first stop light and invented the stop light to. In 1920 Garrett A Morgan went into the news paper business and he was very successful. Garrett Morgan made a lot of money by making the stop light because the state payed him a lot of money because the stop light saved a lot of peoples lives.

 

Martin Luther King Jr.

          Martin Luther King Jr. played an important role in African American history. He was known for his famous speech called “I have a Dream”. He told his speech to over two hundred fifty thousand people. His speech was about white people and black people getting along with each other. Martin Luther King Jr. went to college in 1948 at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. Once he got older he went to Alabama and became a Minister. He got a doctor deploy after he graduated from college. In 1956 Martin Luther’s house was bombed He wrote a book in 1958 called “Stride Toward Freedom”.  In 1964 Martin Luther King Jr. was awarded was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize. Martin Luther was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia and he was assassinated on January 20, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee five days after his birthday. Martin Luther King Jr. played a very important part in African American history.

 

Thurgood Marshall

Thurgood Marshall was a African American and played a role in African American history.  He was born July 2, 1906 in Baltimore, Maryland. His role in history was that he was the first African American to join the Supreme Court.  He fought for human rights and won almost all of his cases.  Earlier he graduated from Lincoln University and then got a degree at Howard University.  He then was a lawyer and joined the NAACP.  Now he was brought in to the Supreme Court by John F Kennedy. Thurgood Marshall was a good man and may he rest in peace.       

James Baldwin

James Baldwin played a very great part in African American history. He was born on August 2nd, 1924 in Harlem, New York. James was closely befriended with singer Nina Simone. He also had eight siblings. James Graduated at DeWitt Clinton High School. He was a great American Rights activist. His part in African American history was that he wrote about the struggle of being black in America. His books inspired hundreds. James never met, seen, or heard of his real fathers name. His strict and cruel stepfather died in a mental hospital in 1943. James is a great man and a great part of African American history.

 

Mea Carol Jemison

          Mea C. Jemison played an amazing role in African American history. Mea C. Jemison was born on October 17, 1956 in Decatur Alabama. She’s still living happily and healthy. Mea was the youngest of three sisters. Wow Mea must have been smart she graduated from Stanford University, with degrees in chemical engineering and afro American studies. Mea or Dr. Jemison was a doctor and a surgeon, Mea was accepted into NASA in 1987. Her amazing role in African American history was that she was the first black woman in space.  Mea can speak fluent Russian, Japanese, and even Swahili! She also appeared in an episode of star trek. Mea did play a big role in African American history that she’ll never forget.

 

Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm

           Shirley Anita St.Hill Chisholm played an important role in African American History. Shirley Chisholm was born on November 30, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York. Shirley died January 1, 2005 in Florida. Shirley Chisholm had a degree in elementary education from Teachers College at Columbia University. She had three jobs. One of her jobs was a US Congress. Another job of hers was being a teacher, and her last job was a New York State assemblywoman. Shirley’s role in African American History was that she fought for the right of women and minorities. She also was the first African American women elected for US Congress. Some interesting facts about Shirley Anita St.Hill Chisholm are that her father was born in British Guiana and her mother was Rudy Seale of Barbados. Another one is that when Shirley was three years old she was sent to Barbados to stay with her grandmother, and did not return to the United States for seven years. Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm was a good person and may her soul rest in peace.

 

Matthew Alexander Henson

Matthew A. Henson was an important person in African American history. His full name is Matthew Alexander Henson. Mr. Henson was born Aug 8, 1866. He dead March 9, 1955. Matthew was married to Lucy Henson. His education is he is a Arctic Explorer. The person he explored with was Mr. Peary. Matthew want to go to the North Pole with Mr. Peary. He want in storms. And they traveled along ways away from his family. Henson had traveled with Peary to the North Pole. They were the first people to the North Pole that is why Henson is a important person in the African American History. 

 

Lena Maggie Walker

Lena Maggie Walker was an interesting woman in African American history. Maggie Lena Walker was born in Richmond Virginia on the 15th of July, in 1867. She died on December 15th in 1934. Maggie was married to Armstead Walker Jr. She had two sons named Russell and Melvin. In 1915 tragedy struck when Maggie’s husband was accidentally killed. Maggie went to school at Richmond’s Public Schools. Maggie’s first job was a teacher. Three years later Maggie started working at the Woman’s Union Insurance Company. Soon after she started working she quickly rose to be the exutive secretary of the company. Lena Maggie Walker’s important role in African American history was that she was the first woman in the USA to become a local bank president. An interesting fact about Maggie was that she founded a newspaper called The St. Luke Herald in 1902. Another interesting fact was that she helped co found for the NAACP. Lena Maggie Walker was very interesting and important woman in African American history.

 

Blanche Kelso Bruce

Blanche Kelso Bruce was a great African-American. He was born on March 1, 1841 in Farmville Virginia, U.S.A. His spouse was Josephine Willson Bruce, but he had no children. He had no education, because he grew up as a slave child. Bruce had many jobs, such as, printer’s apprentice, steamboat porter, teacher, police sheriff, and news paper editor. His role in African-American history was that he was the first African-American to be vice president of America. Bruce died at age 57 on March 17, 1898 in Washington D.C., U.S.A. Blanche Kelso Bruce was a great man.

Gordon Parks played a role in African American history. Gordon Parks was born November 30, 1912. He died March 7, 2006. He was the youngest of 15 brothers and sisters. Gordon Parks parents lived in Kansas. His job was a photographer, a film director, composer, a writer, and a musician. He was the first African American photographer to work with Vogue magazine and Life magazine. Gordon Parks wrote 12 of his own books. He produced many Hollywood films and also many documentaries. Gordon Parks wrote a ballet about Martin Luther King. He did a major Hollywood film.  He was seen by millions of people around the world. Gordon Parks played an important part in African American history.
