Dear Parents:

I am writing to you with the intention of explaining what this Reading Theme Test is and how it is used. If you are not quite sure of something please feel free to call or come in for a more explicit explanation.

This test is given at the end of a theme that is in our reading basal. Each theme consists of four stories. I teach skills and strategies based on the stories the children read in their basal. The areas covered by the test are in bold print and labeled Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, and Part 5. We do not do Part 5: Self-Assessment.

The score your child receives reflects progress he/she has made in the areas that the test covers. I do not put a letter grade on the test. There is a range next to the score they received to monitor the progress made by your child as we do these tests throughout the year.

As each student finishes with the test I grade them. Then I have the student “fix” his/her test. That is why (hopefully) their answers seem to be correct when I have them marked wrong.

For the first 2 tests of the year I read the story and we find the answers for all items in parts 1 and 2 together so they know how to go back and find answers on the future tests. We also complete item 19 together in part 4.

To see how your child scored on a particular part, look at the score I circled and move your finger up to the top where it says “Part Scores:” Remember, if your child scores poorly on one or more parts, it is not the end of the world, but a guide for us to work more closely with those skills!

Again, if you should have any questions please call or stop in. I would be happy to answer them.

Sincerely,

Ben Mauntler
