A Look Back and Ahead

Looking back on this last week I would say we had a good week. Everyone seemed to be excited to return to school and was getting into the “groove” again by Friday. We have a great bunch of children in Second Grade this year. After hearing warnings from some parents about possible trouble spots I felt two premonitions: 1) Uh Oh and 2) I have a nice bunch of supportive parents. Now that last week is over I can happily say that #1 - Uh Oh- is out. I can’t say enough how nice a class we have (and I feel that is a reflection of nice parents too). Thank you for all your support, concerns, and kind words.

During this week in Reading we will dive into the story “The Cats of Tiffany Street”. We will be reviewing more nouns, proper nouns, real/fantasy, and going over plot. For Writing we will be exploring the three types of sentences/punctuation marks. The students will be making up short stories using all 3 types of sentences. The students will be reviewing the values of coins and counting change during Math time. Please be advised I will be asking you to help your child round up change for those activities. In Social Studies we will be studying communities. We will start with a model of a community, look at our own community, and wrap it up by looking at other communities.

We will have a busier week this week. Please try to help your child pack a snack for the afternoon. Also try to be sure he/she is getting enough rest for these long days.

Sincerely,

Ben Mauntler
