It’s hard to believe a month has passed us by already! The children have really settled in nicely and we are really getting going.

I have just started to do guided reading with a few students this week. As we get more independent and learn more centers I will be able to work with more students each day.

During this last week in Reading we read “Julius”. We worked with nouns, real/fantasy, and plot. We also practiced our problem solving strategies to answer questions from the reading. This next week we will be completing our theme test. We will be doing at least half of each part together. Depending on how we are doing, I will let them try the other half of the questions in each part on their own. I will only grade/score the questions they do on their own.

For Writing we will be continuing the three types of sentences/punctuation marks for the next few weeks. The students will be making up sentences that have capitals, end marks, naming/action parts.

During Math we worked on writing equivalent names for numbers, using the <,>, and = signs to compare numbers, and telling time to the nearest 5 minutes. *If you get a chance please work with your child telling time, providing you have an analog clock (clock with hands!). The students will be reviewing the values of coins/counting change and telling time during Math time this next week. We will also be completing our first assessment.

In spelling we have just started to add words to our spelling dictionaries. We will probably have our first spelling list sometime in the next 2 weeks.

In Social Studies we have sketched our community, focusing on our house and the town we live by. We looked at the natural and man-made characteristics and how the two are inter-twined in the story “The Lorax”. We will be comparing the natural and man-made characteristics in our own community next.

Thank you to Mrs. Blevins for coming in last week and running the register for the school storeJ And thank you for the parents who have thoughtfully and tactfully brought in or sent in really neat show-and-tells. Mrs. Domres brought in rabbits, Mrs. Danks brought in their hamster, and we got to see some really cool Japanese items that Mrs. Morley sent with Zoe.

Sincerely,

Ben Mauntler
