Reading

The students are still meeting in guided reading groups one to three times per week (except when testing).  They have made great progress and are developing into very fluent readers!

When listening to your child read, please encourage them to try a reading strategy before they ask for help with an unknown word. Typical strategies to try would be: skip the word to think about what makes sense there, sound out the first 2-4 letters (1st chunk) and cover it up to be able to concentrate on the rest of the word, look through the whole word, and go back when things aren’t making sense to re-read and get the meaning. Again, asking questions about the plot, summary, characters, etc. is a great way to help improve their comprehension.

Math

We have been working hard on identifying shapes. Please continue to listen to your child point them out and help point them out as you see them. It really can be a good “filler” activity to pass time and to spend time together. Please also continue working to help him/her memorize those flashcards. You all have been doing a wonderful job of helping at home, it has really been a blessing here at school to hear them rattle those sums off!

Report Cards

The end of the marking period is January 17th. We will be sending your child’s report card home. We will be sending them out in the Thursday folders on the Thursday after the marking period ends.

School Store

Mrs. Blevins will be coming in on every other Monday (or so, as her schedule permits) to take care of the school store. Please try to remind your child to bring his/her money in on Mondays. We will be starting the Monday routine on January 21st.

Sincerely,
