A Look Back and Ahead

April 8, 2008

Before spring break in Reading we read “Two of Everything”. We worked with predicting, real/fantasy, cause/effect, and summarization. This week we will be reading “The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush”. We will work with the above-mentioned skills and adding elements of tales to the mix.

We will be reviewing strategies and preparing for the ITBS this week as well. We will be doing this in the afternoon in place of Working With Words and Poetry.

In Writing we will review proofreading skills and writing complete sentences. As always, we will be writing paragraphs in our morning journal.

We moved on with our “new” spelling lists. I instructed the children to use words they know they have trouble spelling from their “old” list (which somehow failed to be tested) and new words from their spelling dictionary. We should be able to have a test at the end of the week we get back.

During Math we worked on simple fractions the week before spring break. These have been taught using manipulatives and drawings to support the concepts behind fractions. Please continue working with your child on adding/subtracting (carrying/borrowing) and multiplication (counting groups of things) and division (sharing equally among groups). As your child masters each concept please feel free to move on to bigger and better things! The class is doing a great job of getting these tough skills organized in their brainsJ

School store will be the week of IOWA testing, the week after we get back. Please remember this is subject to change!

Smile…Think spring!!!

Sincerely,

Ben Mauntler
