A Look Back and Ahead

April 11, 2008

This week we read “The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush”. We worked with predicting, real/fantasy, cause/effect, and summarization. We will work with the above-mentioned skills and add elements of tales to the mix after next week. We will be doing so with various tales I have collected. The students will be reading and buddy reading those texts to practice the comprehension skills mentioned above.

In Writing we will review proofreading skills and writing complete sentences. As always, we will be writing paragraphs in our morning journal. We will be taking time to create more stories to publish, next week.

We will be getting our spelling lists organized next week as well. We should be able to get back into having a test every other week again, after next week.

During Math we continued to work on simple fractions this week. These have been taught using manipulatives and drawings to support the concepts behind fractions. Please continue working with your child on adding/subtracting (carrying/borrowing) and multiplication (counting groups of things) and division (sharing equally among groups). As your child masters each concept please feel free to move on to bigger and better things! The class is doing a great job of getting these tough skills organized in their brainsJ We will hopefully be getting into measurement next week.

School store will be the week of IOWA testing, next week. Please remember this is subject to change!

Sincerely,

Ben Mauntler
