Mrs. Lyman's Parent Letter

for Thursday, November 29th, 2007

Dear Kindergarten and First Grade Families,

Our Kindergarten shared reading time this week consisted of three different books about a gingerbread cookie that comes to life.  We talked about the similarities and differences between each book and completed a variety of literacy activities.  The first graders read a story about the desert.  Some of the book is in English and some is in Spanish so it gave us an opportunity to learn some Spanish words.

Kindergarten has been learning a lot about many different shapes and they made a shape book.  First grade will take a math test tomorrow that will assess their ability to tell time, make sums of ten, do frames and arrows, count change and complete a pattern.

We have many families in need here in our own school district and so we have formed the giving tree with ornaments that have items those families need.  I took a personal items ornament.  I would like our class to contribute personal items for a family.  If you are willing to donate please bring in the items any time from now until Dec. 20th.  These items may include shampoo, bar soap, hand soap, tooth paste, tooth brushes, deodorant, laundry soap, etc. and also things like tin foil, saran wrap, garbage bags.  I also urge you to take an ornament for you own family to be able to help.  The things we can provide for these families will help them have a better Christmas.

Our Christmas program is scheduled for Dec. 12th at 7:00p.m.  You may bring your child to our classroom at 6:45.  Mrs. Eichberger asks that they wear white.  The following is a summary of the performance:   Joyuex Noel will feature carols of France. Students will be singing in French and English.  Each class will perform at least one carol during their time on stage.  Selected students will be portraying characters from the Nativity and playing instruments.  There will be portions of the program devoted for an audience sing-a-long.   The performance will take place on our stage this year, with the audience seated in chairs on the gym floor and the bleachers.

Winter weather is here!!!  We go outside unless conditions are extreme.  Please be sure your child has boots, snow pants, mittens, a hat and a coat everyday.  It gets cold, but the fresh air is important so send them prepared.  Thank-you!

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

         Kindergarten

1)      Can you tell me about all the shapes you learned during math?  Can you draw a few?

First Grade

1)      Can you tell me the English word for la desierto (the desert)?  Pescaditos (fish)?

2)      Can you use the following words in a sentence?  Like, call, say, fish, this
