Dear Kindergarten and First Grade Families,

During shared reading this week kindergarteners learned to read the nursery rhyme Mary had a Little Lamb.  They practiced reading l-blend words.  We continue to practice word family words and they are getting very good at writing their own sentences!  First graders were introduced to the story If you give a Moose a Muffin.  They learned new vocabulary words and they wrote their own moose book page to put into a class book.

We had the opportunity to complete a whole group math activity this week.  Each student wrote a number story and illustrated it and I compiled them into a class book.  Each student in our class will get a class book we have made to take home and have as a keepsake from our school year.

We have been working very hard on our bare books, but now it is time to move on and continue other curriculum.  If your child did not finish their book it was sent home today.  Please complete it so they have a story to read at Young Author’s Night next week Thursday.  Each child needs about 4-6 facts.  They should write one fact per page and include a crayon illustration.  Please return your child’s finished book by Thursday so it is here at school for them if they want to come and read.  Young Author’s Night is Thursday, March 20th, from 6:00-7:00.

Tomorrow we get the opportunity to watch the first act of Mulan, a musical being performed by some Onekama students as well as students from Bear Lake and Brethren.

Next week for our reading month activities Monday starts by wearing green for Saint Patrick’s Day.  We will read some limericks, so if you have some, bring them in!  On Tuesday have your child bring in comic strips/books.  I think we will all look forward to Friday when we get to come to school in our pajamas and slippers and have a cozy, relaxing reading time!!

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

          Kindergarten

1)      Can you tell me three to five l-blend words?

First Grade

1)      Can you read and use the following words in a sentence?  Ask, what, give, old, show, tell

2)      Can you grab some change from your piggy bank and count it for me?

I hope you have a good weekend!!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lyman
