Dear Kindergarten and First Grade Families,

This week during shared reading time the kindergarten group practiced reading Humpty Dumpty and Hickory Dickory Dock.  They picked out the rhyming words, completed an –ump word family book and an –ock word family book.  They also played a Humpty Dumpty word game.  The first graders read Eek! There’s a mouse in the house! and completed a variety of phonics and writing activities.

Kindergarten math consists of practice recognizing pennies, nickels, and dimes and counting pennies by 1’s, nickels by 5’s and dimes by 10’s.  On Friday they made a class book about money.  First graders have been introduced to finding equivalent names for numbers and they have been practicing fact families.  They have some fact family flashcards that will be coming home with future homework.

Animal Research projects are due on Monday!  J  Please be sure your child brings in their report along with the model of their animal.  We will be working on putting their report information into the bare books and having them draw pictures so they have their own book to read at Young Author’s Night.  Young Author’s Night will be on March 20th from 6:00-7:00 in the library.

I’m sorry to report that we were unable to visit the public library yesterday.  We will go next week Wednesday instead.  If you have not returned your child’s books yet, please do so as soon as you can.

Next week we will begin doing some special activities to celebrate reading month.  Attached to this letter you will find a calendar with the activities we will do each day.  Some of them involve some planning from home so please read carefully so you know what your child needs on those days.  Friday, March 7th  is the first dress-up day.  Your child is invited to dress like one of their favorite book characters.

Pizza Hut Book-It coupons are attached!  Enjoy your pizza night!  Keep reading with your child!

Homework will resume next week for first graders.  Your child will also receive new spelling words.  Please remember to practice spelling words each day.  Your child is tested on spelling words each Friday.  Math flashcards went home last week.  Please be sure you are practicing those as well as the sight words.  Let me know if you need more.

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

Kindergarten

First Grade
