Dear Kindergarten and First Grade Families,

During shared reading this week the kindergarteners enjoyed listening to The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  They wrote about their favorite food from the story, practiced completing sentences and learned about exclamation marks.  The first graders read A Mother for Choco.  They made a class book, made an animal flip book and wrote about their favorite part.

We finished our first grade science unit on landforms.  The kindergarteners finished their unit on living and non-living things ad what living things need.  Next week we will start a kindergarten science unit on physical science: pushes and pulls.

Kindergarteners are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the chicks.  While they are waiting for them to hatch they are making a calendar.  First graders practiced place value with base ten blocks, used coins to count and pretend to purchase from a store, and practiced making change.

We will be going on a fieldtrip to Moomer’s ice cream factory on May 15th.  Our Onekama P.T.O. has graciously provided the expenses for our bus gas and driver.  The cost for your child to attend the fieldtrip is $3.50.  We will be learning the ice cream making process.  At the end of the fieldtrip your child will get a cone or bowl of ice cream.  After we leave Moomer’s we will drive to Elberta Park for lunch and the children will be able to play on the playground.  Parents are more than welcome to attend!  If you plan to join us please include your $3.50 when you send in your child’s money.  I will start accepting money a.s.a.p.

Our Spring Sing concert will be Thursday, May 1st in our gymnasium.  Your child should come to our classroom by 6:45 pm.  The show starts at 7:00 pm.

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

            Kindergarten

1)      What do living things need?

First Grade

1)      If you have 8 pieces of candy and your friend has 4, how many more pieces of candy do you have?

2)      Can you tell me about the story A Mother for Choco?

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lyman
