Mrs. Lyman's Parent Letter

Dear Kindergarten and First Grade Families,

Our week was a bit different due to the Iowa Test of the Basic Skills that first grade had to complete.  The test took the place of our shared reading time.  Kindergarten participated in a computer activity each day.

Some of the kindergarten students have started meeting in a guided reading group this week.  I included some information about guided reading so that you are aware of what your child does as that time of day.

Kindergarteners are working on a calendar project I math.  The are filling in the numbers for the months, drawing a picture and writing an appropriate phrase for the months.  First graders had a fun, hands-on symmetry lesson and they continue practicing counting money.  This week they also practiced base ten blocks, greater than and less than, and they were introduced to the dollar bill.  I made a mistake when copying the Unit 7 checking progress and failed to copy the back page.  The kids have since corrected their mistakes so I have no way of knowing how they answered the questions.  I am very sorry!  From what I observed as they were taking the test, it appeared some needed extra practice with place value, writing the time, and showing coins to make a certain amounts of change.  Please continue to practice these skills.

I am still accepting shapes for our museum.  Please ask your child to find a 3-d shape to bring to school.  I can also use more items for our science station.

We will be going on a fieldtrip to Moomer’s ice cream factory on May 15th.  Our Onekama P.T.O. has graciously provided the expenses for our bus gas and driver.  The cost for your child to attend the fieldtrip is $3.50.  We will be learning the ice cream making process.  At the end of the fieldtrip your child will get a cone or bowl of ice cream.  After we leave Moomer’s we will drive to Elberta Park for lunch and the children will be able to play on the playground.  Parents are more than welcome to attend!  If you plan to join us please include your $3.50 when you send in your child’s money.  I will start accepting money a.s.a.p.

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

            Kindergarten

1)      Can you tell me about the spring season?

First Grade

1)      Can you draw a shape that has lines of symmetry?

2)      Can you tell me 3 of the Earth’s landforms?

Enjoy the weekend!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lyman
