Mrs. Niederstadt's Class

November 1, 2007

Dear Parents,

On Thursday second grade students will be going to Spirit of the Wood’s Club in Brethren with Mr. Mauntler’s class from 11 a.m. and returning between 2:00 and 2:45 p.m.  Your child will need to bring a sack lunch, small towel or wet wipes, extra long sleeve shirt/coat, and clipboard (if possible).  Please make sure your child wears weather-appropriate clothing.  All activities will be outdoors.  If you have further questions, please feel free to contact Mr. Mauntler at 889-9674 ext. 342.  Mrs. Neph and Mrs. Somerville have volunteered to assist on this field trip.

Parent-teacher conferences are on Tuesday, Nov. 20th and Wednesday, Nov. 21st just before Thanksgiving.  Students will be dismissed early on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m.  Conferences begin at 5 – 8 p.m.  On Wednesday there is no school for students.  Conferences will be held from 8 – 11 a.m.  If you have not made your appointment, then please call Mary Bergren at 889-9674.  For split families, I hope you are able to make joint arrangements.  This will allow each student to have one slot.  Currently I have 25 students, but there are only 24 conference slots.

Enclosed in your child’s folder is his/her last math test.  First grade students were tested on counting tally marks, counting coins, telling time, addition and subtraction.

The new unit is Visual Patterns, Number Patterns, and Counting.  Students will have several experiences with patterns that use objects, colors and numbers.  As patterns with numbers are investigated, students will look more closely at patterns found in odd and even numbers.  They will observe patterns in the ending digits of counts by 2s, 3s, 5s, and 10s.  Frames-and-arrows will be introduced to help children investigate number sequences.  Also they will continue to develop time-telling, money-counting skills, and addition and subtraction.

Second grade students were tested on turnaround facts, fact families and frames-and-arrows.  The new unit is Place Value, Money, and Time.  Students will read, write, and compare numbers from 0 to 999, working on concepts and skills built upon since kindergarten.  Students will review place value, identifying different coin combinations for the same amount, and making change.

Please note that our next visit to the Onekama Public Library has changed to Wednesday, Nov. 14th at 11:45 to 1:30ish.  Your child’s books are due on Nov. 7th.  Please send them to school with your child on or before Nov. 7th, I will return them for you.  Or you may return them to any Manistee Public Library branch.

I would like to add first grade boy scouts and girl scouts meetings to my weekly parent letters.  If you have a schedule, please send one in with your child.  Thanks!
