Mrs. Niederstadt's Class

March 14, 2008

Dear Parents,

Most second grade students did not complete their magazine test this week.  Mr. Mauntler was out on Tuesday and we participated in the production of Mulan today so the test will carry over into the beginning of next week.  Please be sure your child has had a good breakfast and is to school on time.

In social studies second grade students will continue to work on History: Living and Working Together in Communities with Mrs. Eichberger.  Students will demonstrate chronological thinking by distinguishing among years and decades using a timeline of Onekama Village and Manistee County events.  They will discuss changes in local community over time.  Lastly they will write a historical report about the history of the local community. These are new Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCE) and are not found on our report card yet.

First grade will start two new social studies concepts called “Geography: The World in Spatial Terms and Geography: Places and Regions.”  It will take about two weeks to complete the units.  In The World in Spatial Terms, we’ll create a simple aerial view of our classroom, discuss places that have an absolute location such as home and school address, and practice personal directions (left, right, front, back) to describe the locations of places in the school.  In Geography: Places and Regions, we’ll distinguish between land masses and bodies of water using maps and globes, distinguish between physical (clouds, trees, weather) and human (buildings, playgrounds, reading area, library, restroom) characteristics of places, and lastly describe boundaries of different school regions.  These are new Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCE) and are not found on our report card yet.

Throughout the week we’ll continue to celebrate March is reading month.  Monday is St. Patrick’s Day.  Students can wear green.  I’m going to read some limericks.  Tuesday is Cartoon Day.  Students can bring comic books to read during D.E.A.R.  Thursday is Young Author’s Night.  Students are invited to share their B.A.R.E. books in the Media Center at 6 – 7 p.m.  Your child used the information collected to make his/her Animal Research Project to make their B.A.R.E. books.  Friday is Camp Read-A-Lot.

On Friday the 10th annual Camp Read-A-Lot will be held in our room.  Students can bring pillows, sleeping bags, blankets, stuffed animals, snacks, and some favorite books.  Also comfortable clothing will be appropriate such as pajamas, sweatpants, jogging outfits, and slippers.  Your child can wear these items to school for Camp Read-A-Lot, but please be sure it is weather appropriate.  Also extra camping snacks would be appreciated such as popcorn, trail mix, chex mix, marshmallows, pretzels, etc.

In my last parent letter I discussed parent-teacher conferences.  They are Wednesday, March 26th at 5-8 p.m., but I need to change our conference date.  I am leaving Wednesday after school to travel downstate.  My family and I are flying out of Flint at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday.   I’ll be out of the classroom on Thursday and Friday.  I apologize for any inconvenience, but these dates had the cheapest flight tickets.    I would like to meet with you on Tuesday, March 25th at 3-7 p.m.  If you would like to meet with me, then you can contact me to schedule an appointment for conference night.  I know it is last minute but I’ve just been given permission to change the date.

Please visit our web site at http://www.onekama.k12.mi.us/e2008/g1-2/index.htm.

I’ve added several new events such as a concert by Maggie, Pizza Hut/Manistee Public Library field trip and a visit from High-Tech Dental.
