Mrs. Niederstadt's Class

February 22, 2008

Dear Parents,

Due to snow days, Good Behavior Ski Day and Valentine’s Day, the last two weeks have been very busy.  Good Behavior Ski Day was a huge success thanks to all the chaperones.  If you would like to view pictures and read our thank you letters, then you can visit at http://www.onekama.k12.mi.us/e2008/SkiDay/Mrs.N/Grades1-2.htm.  Our Valentine’s Day party was wonderful as well.  Thank you to Mrs. Buckner, Mrs. Madsen, Mrs. Showalter, and Mrs. Soper for their craft donations.  If you would like to view pictures, then visit at http://www.onekama.k12.mi.us/e2008/g1-2/Valentine/Party.htm

Last Wednesday we walked to the Onekama Public Library.  We were unable to walk the previous week.  We were short-handed due to Good Behavior Ski Day and Valentine’s Day.  Students were able to check out three books.  These books are due on Wednesday, March 12th

Today we had a visit from High-Tech Dental discussing dental health.  February is dental health month.  Next week we will study more about healthy teeth.

On Wednesday students will have a substitute.  Mrs. Lyman and I will be in the building meeting about our curriculum and developing new units to match to the new state standards.  On Thursday students will be working with ink during art class.  Please be sure that your child dresses appropriately.

Second grade has completed their third theme (magazine) test.  Unfortunately I am not finished grading these tests.  They will come home in next week’s Friday Folder.  The new reading unit is called That’s Incredible!  It includes stories called The Day Jimmy’s Boa Ate the Wash, What Happened to Patrick’s Dinosaurs, and An Octopus Is Amazing.  Over the next few weeks, you will see four books come home: Hamid’s Surprise, Night Flyers, David’s Crows, and Super Cluck

Yesterday first grade students finished their magazine test.  This test assessed reading comprehension, phonics/decoding, writing and language, and proofreading.  The proofreading section was a new assessment.   It’s very similar to daily correcting errors on our morning message.  It will come home in next week’s Friday Folder.  Our new reading unit is called “Unexpected Guests.”  It includes stories called Eek!  There’s a Mouse in the House, There’s an Alligator Under My Bed, and If You Give a Moose a Muffin.  Over the next few weeks, you will see four books come home: A Great Place for Llama, A Tune for My Mother, Never Wake a Sleeping Snake, and Sheep in a Shop

Also first grade has completed a Unit 5 written assessment (math test).  Enclosed is your child’s results.  They took their test on Wednesday.  We reviewed the answers on Thursday.  Enclosed you will find Unit 6 Family Letter.  Please review.

The following dates you may want to add to your calendar:

  • Substitute – February 27
  • Buddy Reading with Mr. Mauntler’s Class – February 29
  • Onekama Public Library – March 12
  • Girl Scout Meeting (2nd grade) – March 13

Warmly,
Shantel
