Mrs. Niederstadt's Class

February 8, 2008

Dear Parents,

Second grade has completed their theme (magazine) test with Mr. Mauntler.  Your child’s test will come home in next week’s Friday Folder.

Also second grade students have completed Unit 5 written assessment (math test).  Your child’s results are enclosed.  The new unit is called “Whole Number Operations and Number Stories.”  I’ve enclosed a family letter written by Everyday Mathematics to help you help your child with the upcoming lessons.  It discusses the new topics, answers to home links, vocabulary and much more.  I believe you will find most of it very helpful to you and your child.  For the remainder of the year I will include a family letter with each new math unit for both first and second grade families.

The Class of 2011 will be collecting returnable cans and bottles on Saturday, February 9th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the cafeteria.  They would greatly appreciate your support.  The money raised will go towards their class trip.

Next week the Onekama Public Library is hosting Valentine crafts all week.  You can stop into the library during the library hours: Monday & Tuesday – 11-5 and Wednesday & Thursday – 12-6.  If you have any questions, feel free to call Jane at 889-4041.

On Tuesday we will be at Crystal Mountain for Good Behavior Ski Day.  We will leave at 8:30 a.m. and arrive at Crystal Mountain by 9:15 a.m.  Each grade will be called individually into the rental building to receive equipment.  Once everyone is geared up, we will meet at Totem Park for lessons.  Students must participate in lessons to earn their ski tickets.  Once students earn their ski tickets, they can ski outside of Totem Park with adult supervision.  Some students will be at Totem Park the entire day and others will graduate to the ski lifts.  Each chaperone will be responsible for one to three students.  If you are a skiing volunteer, then please check at Totem Park for students able to ski outside of Totem Park.  Please find the enclosed list. Ski rental equipment will be returned around 1:45 p.m.  The busses will leave by 2:15 p.m. and return to school by 2:45 p.m.  It should be a fun day for everyone!  Please remember that your child needs a sack lunch for this day and it would be helpful if your child’s name were on his/her sack/lunch box.  Also pack extra snacks!!

The weather has been unpredictable.  Students should dress in layers.  Also dress your child in sweatpants or running pants.  Jeans are uncomfortable in ski boots and do not go over them.  Students need one pair of socks and should have extra hats, gloves, and socks packed in their bag, if needed.  Please be sure everything is labeled.

On Wednesday we will walk to the Onekama Public Library.  Most students have returned their books, but several students did keep them.  I did renew any books not returned yet so no fees will accrue.  Students will be able to check out three books.  These books will be due on Wednesday, March 5th.  While we are at the library, we are able to do an art and craft project.  If you are able to walk with us, then I would love your help!!

Our Valentine’s Day party is on Thursday, February 14th at 11:45 – 2:00 p.m.  Everyone is invited.  I hope to see you there!  Charity Domres, Gail Hopwood, Rachel Lowe, Mary Madsen, Jennifer Redman, Heidi Wisniski have volunteered to be helpers.  You will be in charge of an art project so please come to the room at 11:30 a.m. for instructions.  Leslie Acton, Cynthia Corey, Gail Hopwood, Destiny LaFleur and Rachel Lowe have volunteered to provide treats.  Our goal is healthy treats.  Please let me know what you will be bringing in.  Helen Johnson, Mary Madsen and Karen Somerville will provide a drink.  Peggy Blattner will provide cups and plates.  I need the following items for our Valentine’s Day party: white lunch bags, white hearted-shaped paper doilies (Valentine’s cards), 25 packets of seeds (Plant One on Me), 20-gauge wire (Beading Hearts), beads (Beading Hearts), flat-bottomed plastic jewels (Feet-Heart), 40 mm googly eyes (Bighearted Hello) and lg. package of red card stock (Feet-Heart and Bighearted Hello).  Attached is a small picture of each one of these projects which I think would make great gifts to parents, grandparents, etc.   If we are unable to get some of these items, then I will find a simpler gift with items already at school such as construction paper and markers.  Please find the attached sheet.  It’s our class list to assist students in addressing their Valentine’s Day cards.

Since there is no school on Friday, students will not have any spelling words next week or homework.  Also students will not have school on Monday, Feb. 18th for Winter Break.  Enjoy your long weekend!
