Mrs. Niederstadt's Class

April 11, 2008

Dear Parents,

Welcome back!  I hope everyone had a fun and restful spring break.  Before leaving for spring break, first grade students had an addition test.  All students passed it and now are practicing subtraction facts.  Students brought home their subtraction math flashcards for the first time last Tuesday.

Also before break first grade students took a math assessment covering material on Unit 6: Developing Fact Power.  The first page is a copy of the original test; I’ve graded this page.  The second page is the original test.  We reviewed the answers together in class.  If there was an error, then they were supposed to correct it.  The average score is 83%.  The directions were a bit more complicated so several of the errors were simple errors.  Enclosed is Unit 7: Geometry and Attributes parent letter.  It gives a good overview of the unit plus the answers to all home links.  Keep it close at hand.

Second grade students recently completed their math assessment over Unit 7: Patterns and Rules.  Most students received an S+.  Enclosed is Unit 8: Fractions parent letter.

Next we will begin Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS). The format will be similar to our magazine tests.  We will test in the mornings only.  Please be sure your child is to school on time and has had a good breakfast.   We will test on Monday - Thursday.  Second grade students will test with Mr. Mauntler.  First grade students will stay in the classroom with me.  This had been the format all year.  Due to ITBS test, there will be no spelling test or homework.  Also our parent volunteers will have the morning off.  We’ll see them the following week.

Over the next several weeks students will take turns reading our “All About Me” book.  In order for all students to be able to read the book before the end of the school year, we will begin next week.  If your child does have this book, then they will not have to do the other homework like their classmates.  Some students will have the book over the weekend, but please be sure to return the book with your child on the next school.

Next Tuesday Life Touch will be here to take spring pictures.  No money needs to be sent in at this time.  Students’ pictures will be sent home in several weeks.  Enclosed will be a price list.  If you would like to purchase part or all of them, then you can send in the money.  If you do not want them, just return them to school with your child.  Enclosed is a flyer.

During the month of April our classroom will collect items for the food pantry.  We will collect until Wednesday, April 23rd.  All items collected will be distributed to families in our area.

Enclosed are March and April’s book orders.  They are due on Friday, April 18th.  No cash please.  You can make your check out to Scholastic Book Clubs.
