A Visit from Onekama's
Robotics Club

On January 30th the Robotics Club came to the fourth grade classroom. The team's name was "Lake Effect 1674" They told us about how they built their robot and how the competition that they put their robots in was played. The Robotics Club was for High School and Lego Club was for Junior High. It was really cool. ...Jacinda, grade 4

The robotics team came in our class. They made a robot that flung fome balls, that particular robot was last year's bot. They showed us some pictures from their website. They told us how the competition worked. Travis asked how many of us would be on the team when we were old enough. ...Kaitlin, grade 5

They have their own website called www.lakeeffect1674.com . The team also said that there are teams nationwide. The robotics is very good and I might be interested in it someday. ...Cady, grade 5

Their robot could move around the room and it could shoot balls. When they demonstrated, they hit Travis who wasn't paying attention! High schoolers these day! But Mr. Neph caught the ball and Mr. Neph isn't the youngest man on earth if you know what I'm saying. Just kidding. ...Nisha, grade 5 This morning at 8:45 the Robotics team came to our class. First they showed us what game their robot plays in. Then they told us how they got their parts and how many weeks they had to make it in. The last thing they told us is what place they got in the turniment. That was what they told us. ...Julie L., grade 4 Today the Lake Effect team came in to show us their robot. It shot balls out of it and into a hole. A camera looks at the hole and always aims at it. They showed us pictures of building the robot. It was a good presentation.
...William, grade 5
To join the Robotics Team you have to be in high school. There is also a Lego Team you can join in 6th grade. The robot must be a certain weight and height. You get six weeks to build your robot. If your robot stalls in the playing field you can't move until all robots are shut off. ...Jon, grade 4

They even showed us pictures of making their robot. They said that they are going to make another one for this year. I thought it was pretty cool. ...Sami-Kay, grade 5

The Robotics Team demonstrated how they used their robot and what it did in a match. We got to watch an animated show kind of thing and it showed the class how a match was. It was so cool. ...Payton, grade 4

Some kids asked them things about their machine and if they need help doing it. The machine shoots balls and they also have to ship it to the game. ...Devin C. grade 4

This Robot shot fome balls out. When the balls shot out and Mr. Neph tryed to catch them, he missed and it hit him in the head. I enjoyed the robot. ...Faith, grade 5

The robot was designed to shoot out balls at speeds of 26 mph (miles per hour). Although the original speed was 32 mph, they could only shoot 26 mph. ...Sam B, grade 5

It could shoot balls out this hole. It had a camera that could see about 50 feet. Mr. Neph tried to catch a ball and he did. I'm glad the Robotics team came in. ...John, grade 5

They told us that when they were in a race another robot fell on theirs and their robot was out of the game for that round until they could fix it. They controlled the speed (how fast it goes). The ball speed can only go as fast as 26 miles per hour. Some day I wish I could be on the Robotics team. ...Lexi, grade 5

They brought in last year's robot. They showed us how it shoots the balls it shoots. They told us about compitition. It looks cool. ...Mitchel, grade 5

Today we saw a robot in Mrs. Brown's class. They shot a ball and hit one person in the head. The robot's name was Lake Effects 1674. ...Brandon, grade 5

Today we saw a robot. They showed us how to work it. They talked about it. Then they talked about comptishion. ...Nick, grade 5

The guys showed us what the robots did and how they made their robots. It was a blast. I want to join the Lego robot making next year. ...Mariah, grade 5

The Robotic team talked to us about their robot they built last year. When I get to sixth grade I'm going to try to be on the Lego Team. I might become an engineer when I grow up. ...Jarett, grade 4 They said it takes about $6,000 just to compete in the competition. They have some perfessional engineers come in to help them out. It looks very interesting so I might try it in 6th grade. ...Kayla F., grade 4 They talked about a lot of things. There is a certain weight and height the robots have to be. This robot was able to shoot out balls. You get to do tornaments. I had a great time learning.  ...Janique, grade 4
Today three of the 12 Lake Effect team members came to talk to us about the robotics team. They told us what they do in competitions. They only have four girls! Now they said they are going to come up with a Lego Club! I want to do that in Jr. High. That covers what we did this morning. ...Haley, grade 5  Today we saw a robot. They told us about how they made it and how the races work. Some other things they told us how it works and how the camera broke on the field. They showed us some pichers of how they made it. ...Meghan, grade 5 They had a Robot that they made themselves. They can even control it. They played in a competshon with the robot. The robot fired balls really fast but they were sqyeshey.  The game was they had to drive around on a field and try to shoot the ball into the hoop. I think I might join Logo club and Robot club. ...Andrew, grade 4
We watched a video about the robot and how it was made and do stuff. They showed us how to shoot balls to people. I think it was really cool to see that. I totally want to be in it. ....Emily H., Grade 5 The team is in Onekama High School and competes with about 125 other teams in the U.S. It was very interesting to watch and hear about the robot. ...Natasha, grade 5 I think it would be hard to build a robot. One because you'd have to buy most of the parts for it, and two they have a limit on the weight and height of everything. It looked really complicated and really cool. ...Brittany T., grade 5
When I was in the math room there were people who talked about the robot and what it could do. They went to championships all over the world. What they did was pretty cool. The robot shot foam balls into a net. There was a little camera and a green light above the net. So the camera was programmed to see that and shoot into the net. People built the robot. They bought the parts and put it together. ...Josh, grade5 They had us move to the sides of the walls so they can show us how it works. Mr. Neph had to go long and catch the 2nd ball. It was really funny because they kept shooting them faster and faster and one hit the back of Travis's head. That was my favorite part. It was really awesome. ...Sierra, grade 4

The team talked about all of the things the robot could do. The robot's specialty was shooting rubber balls. They also talked about how 6th - 8th graders would be able to participate in a lego team. I really hope they'll have another robot to show us later this year! ...Claire, grade 5
