The Fourth Grade Great Turkey Competition of 2006

I got the idea for my turkey when my grandma and I were at Manistee Variety. We were looking and we found turkey feathers and a styrofoam body, neck, feet, head and legs. My grandma found paper mache for body, legs, neck and head feathers. The saying I thought of was, "don't eat me I taste like liver." I wanted the turkeys wing to be spread out. The turkeys wings weren't that big. The ground of my turkey was sand. We were going to put bird feed on but it would take too long. We put a black hat on my turkey. It took about three days to make it. On the last day of making it I spent all of my time at my grandmas house. My grandma said he looked really cute. My mom said I did a very good job on and and I thought so too. ...Devin T.

This year my class made turkeys. Everyone had to make one at home. I brought everything and put it together. Mine was made out of bagged pinecones and feathers and a rock. I think my turkey could get beat. I hope I win. …Jarett

When I made my turkey my idea came from my imagination I guess. What I yoused to make my turkey was a balloon, some newspaper, glue and water, paint, feathers, a little hat and that's all. Yes! It was a paper mache. I think my turkey was really good. I want to see how it turns out in the competition. Maybe it will be first or last. I guess we will just have to see... Gerald

My turkey is made out of metal, but I think mine is going to win. How we made it is we took a ham can and took all the ham out. Then we went to my Grampa’s store in Arcadia and found all the parts we needed. The we came home and hot glued all the parts on and That’s how I made my turkey. …Julie
I made a Detroit Tiger Turkey. It’s made with Lights, fome ball and clay. We put orange and black cloth in it. We got the idea from when the Tigers went to the World Series. We used paint mixers for the wings and tail feathers. It had a baseball bat, baseball, baseball glove, and a baseball helmet. …Jon
I got the idea for my turkey when I was at Manistee Variety. I got two balls for the head and body. I also got some shiny brown paper to cover it. I got feathers, eyes, and yellow foam paper for a beak. My turkey's name is Tom. I call him Mr. Gobble. After the contest is over I will keep Tom. My mom came up with the sign idea. All my family thought Tom was cute. ...Katie My Dad and I first thought of Falling Leaves Turkey when we were out raking.  We really liked all of the colors. My Falling Leaves Turkey was made of a hanging flower pot, fleece, Styrofoam bells, and lots of hot glue. …Jacinda
In October the fourth grade started to make turkeys. My turkey is made of paper mache and feathers. It took about seven days to make mine. A lot of the turkeys look really good. It was pretty easy to make mine. I had a good time making my turkey. …Janique
My turkey is the basketball. It took a long time to build. The head is a baseball. The beak is a golf tee. They eyes are marbles. We popped a basketball for the body. We drilled a hole in the baseball for it’s head. The basketball says spring slam! And that’s how I made my turkey. …Andrew In fourth grade we made turkeys for our turkey contest. I made my turkey out of felt. I glued on fake eyelashes. I also put on leaves. My turkey took almost 4 hours to make. We used 9 rolls of felt. My mom and I stayed up later than 8:00. We used a hot glue gun. I burned my mom. At the end my mom and I put on some sparkles and pipeliners and fake eyeballs. I don't know what you think, but I think it's great. ...Cheyenne
This year the fourth grade made turkeys. I made a Christmas turkey. I have no idea how I came up with it. Well, anyway on my turkey we (as in me and my mom) put lights on it and a start and its head and that’s pretty much it. …Payton

Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Bennett’s
7th Annual Turkey Contest

This is a fun assignment that we expect all students to do. Students design and create their own turkey. All kinds of materials may be used…the more creative the better! They may have others in their family help.

They have about two weeks to work on this “at home” project. This year all turkeys were turned in by Wednesday, November 8th.  They may however turn them in as soon as they complete it. They are displayed in the school for several weeks. The elementary classes, as well as those past turkey creators in the middle and high school, vote for their favorite turkey.  Prizes are then awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.

The idea for this creative project originates with my (Mrs. Bennett) wonderful mentor when I was student teaching. It was something that she did with her class that I thought was a great creative idea that has now continued on at Onekama for the past seven years. We hope to see it continue for many more years to come!

My mom said that we should make a turkey out of 2 gourds. My mom and I got out the supplies for the turkey. I made it out of 2 gourds, 2 tiny gogely eyes, cut pieces of paper, a piece of red see through cloth, and held together with toothpicks. I like my turkey a lot and his name is Toothpick Turkey. ...Tucker

Do you know why I call my turkey Palmer the Turkey? Well because he is made out of Palmer clay. I got the idea from my Mom Shelly. My turkey Palmer is very small and very cute. Palmer is very colorful. The other turkeys are very, very good. I would like to win but there are some great turkeys out there. I would like my friends to win. ...Hanah

My turkey is made out of a flower pot, feathers, and some painted sticks. It took a lot of hard work to make it. I added feathers. Even though my feathers are yellow, here’s my excuse: my turkey fell in yellow paint. It took a looong time!  …Kayla
