Mrs. Niederstadt's
Parent Letter

April 26, 2007

Dear Parents,

We have another new student, Jimmy.  Jimmy has moved here from Warren.  He has a sister, Selena, in Mr. Neph’s room.  I would like to welcome Jimmy and his family to our school.  Our classroom has 22 students now.

In mathematics we have begun a new mathematics unit called “Mental Arithmetic, Money and Fractions.”  In this unit students will examine a dollar bill.  They will continue to count and record amounts of money using pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters, often in more than one way.  They will also begin learning how to make change.  Later in this unit, students will work with fractions.  They will be reminded that fractions are equal parts of wholes.

Next week we will have a magazine test.  We will test on Monday – Wednesday from 8:00 – 9:45 a.m.  Please be sure your child is on time and has had a good breakfast.

On Tuesday we will have our annual Spring Sing.  This year it will be help on the school hill, overlooking Portage Lake.  Families are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner, blankets, lawn chairs, and arrive one hour before the show.  The Onekama Lions Club will be serving hot dogs and soda prior to the program.  It has been suggested that students wear denim with red, white and blue for the performance.  Students should be ready at 6:45 p.m.  The school gymnasium will be in the inclement weather location and the picnic dinner will not take place.

Ms. Schultz and I are going to take our classes on a field trip to Moomer’s Ice Cream in Traverse City on Thursday, May 17th at 9:30 a.m.  We will leave the school at 8:00 a.m.  The tour takes about 1-1/2 hours.  At the end of the tour, each student will receive an ice cream cone.  The Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) will pay for the cost of the bus and driver.  Students are responsible for a fee of $3.50 to receive a guided tour and a homemade ice cream cone.  Afterwards we will stop at Elberta Park for a sack lunch.  We should return to the school around 2:00 p.m.  You need to sign and return the attached permission slip and include $3.50 in an envelope with your child’s name on it.   We would love your help.  Parents are welcome to attend.  If you’re interested, then you will need to include your fee of $3.50 in your child’s envelope.  Please label the envelope accordingly.   We would prefer cash, but checks can be made out to Moomer’s, if necessary.  If you would like to learn more about Moomer’s, then visit their web site at www.moomers.com

Warmly,

Shantel
