Miss Schultz's Parent Letter

Tuesday, September 6th, 2005

Dear Kindergarten Families,

Welcome to my Kindergarten classroom! This will be a wonderful year full of many successes for your child. I enjoyed meeting those of you and your child who were here last Thursday. I look forward to meeting the rest of you soon. I am entering into my third year of teaching Kindergarten at Onekama elementary and I could not be more excited.

The literacy program I use is called the Building Blocks program which is a developmentally appropriate, multilevel, framework for Kindergarten. This program challenges students at every level. It focuses on the desire to learn to read and write, language concepts, print concepts, phonemic awareness, interesting words and letters and sounds. I plan to write all of you a newsletter each week telling you all the things we have been doing throughout the week. In addition to these weekly updates I will also summarize each month so you are always aware of the development of your Kindergartener.

The folder with this letter in it that you received today are Thursday folders. Beginning next Thursday these will come home each week with any information that you may need. Please return the folder with your child each Friday.

At orientation I had a volunteer sign-up sheet. My literacy centers will be each day beginning at approximately 10:15 and ending at 11:30. I would like one volunteer per day so I am working on setting up a schedule. Thus far I have Lisa Morley, Peggy Pepera, Jill Bronson, Lynette Maxey, Charity Domres and Betsy Neph on my volunteer list. Thank-you to those ladies for being willing to donate their time! If anyone else would like to volunteer their time in our classroom please send me a note this week. I would like to try and have a schedule in place by the end of the week.

We will have two snack times in our day. The morning snack will be on a rotation system so that your child gets 1 chance per month to provide a healthy snack for the rest of the class. The afternoon snack needs to be brought in from your home. Please send your child to school this week with two snacks and along with this letter is a snack calendar which will begin next week.

Please do not forget about our Open House tomorrow night from 6:00 to 7:30. Also please take note that on Friday we will be having a hat day to raise money to help in the hurricane Katrina relief effort. Your child can bring in 50 cents and then wear a favorite hat for the day.

I have an open door policy. Please e-mail me or jot me a note if you ever have any questions or concerns. I believe this is a crucial ingredient in the partnership we will have throughout this important year. Thank-you! Enjoy the first week!

Sincerely,

Miss Schultz
