Miss Schultz's Parent Letter

Thursday, Oct. 20, 2005

Dear Kindergarten Families,

This week in our classroom our theme has been pumpkins and we have been learning all about the letter Pp. At the language center students completed their letter Pp book, 2 Pp tongue twister activities and they decorated a die-cut letter P. At the writing center students practiced writing the letter Pp, drew a picture of something beginning with Pp, wrote a sentence describing their picture and dictated a story. At the math center students learned to write the number 10, practiced writing all the numbers we have learned to date, made shapes with popsicle sticks and made popsicle stick patterns. At the theme art center this week our mom volunteers read It’s Pumpkin Time! By Zoe Hall and helped the children make a story of a pumpkin which illustrated the five stages in the growth of a pumpkin.

As promised at the beginning of the year I would like to briefly explain the things we have been learning thus far in Kindergarten. If you would like to help your child at home please pay close attention to the academics we have been working on and you can continue to practice at home.

Language: Over the past couple months students have been introduced to all the letters and their sounds. We have worked on the letters Ss, Aa, Cc, Ll, and Pp for 1 whole week each.

Writing: We have learned to correctly write the letters Ss, Aa, Cc, Ll, and Pp. Your child should be writing their name correctly — First letter uppercase and the rest lowercase. We are beginning to practice copying sentences from the whiteboard so we talk about uppercase letters at the beginning and periods at the end. Some students are able to work with me and figure out by listening to letter sounds how to spell words in their writing.

Math: In October Kindergarten students need to know how to count by 1’s up to 35. On a daily basis we practice counting by 5’s and by 10’s. At this point children need to know how to count backwards from 10. We have learned how to correctly write the numbers 0 through 10. We are practicing number recognition. We have been practicing patterns and children should be able to label patterns with letters, for example an AB pattern or an ABC pattern. We have reviewed all the basic shapes. Children should recognize a square, circle, triangle and rectangle.

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

  1. What sound does the letter Pp make?
  2. Can you tell me 3-5 words that begin with the letter Pp?
  3. Can you tell me the five stages in the growth of a pumpkin?
  4. For those of you who signed up to help at our Halloween party the schedule is as follows:

I will need you to come in at 1:20 to help the children get into their costumes. Our parade around the school begins at 1:40. Jennifer Burgess, Lisa Morley and Charity Domres are bringing a snack. Jennifer Burgess is bringing a drink. Jennifer Burgess, Jill Bronson, Lisa Morley, Peggy Pepera and Charity Domres are classroom helpers. Thanks so much to those gals for volunteering to come in and help during this time!!

Enjoy the weekend!

Sincerely,

Miss Schultz
