Miss Schultz's Parent Letter

Thursday, May 11th, 2006

Dear Kindergarten Families,

We have started a unit on the ocean!  This week we have learned about all the animals that live in the ocean and we have been transforming a corner of the room into the ocean.  The kids made 3d animals to hang, jellyfish, and tropical fish out of old CD’s.

At the language center students used letter tiles to make 6 words.  They read ocean animal riddles and the completed an ocean animal beginning letter activity.

At the writing center students wrote in their journals about what they would do if they lived near the ocean.  They completed a chart to tell me what they already know about the ocean and what they would like to learn about the ocean.  They also put together ocean word puzzles and then chose one word to use in a sentence.

At the math center students practiced making tally marks to keep track of home many different ocean animals they could find in books.  I helped them do some folding to make an origami whale.  They folded paper numerous times, unfolded the paper and then used a variety of colors for all the different shapes they made when they folded.  They also completed a math review activity.

I want to thank those of you who have turned in your Moomer’s fieldtrip permission slips and money.  If you are planning to join us as a chaperone your cost is $3.50.  I will take that at any time before the 31st.  On the 31st we will be leaving school at about 8:15 and returning at about 2:45.  Please be sure to pack a lunch for your child on that day.  If you have not turned in your child’s permission slip or $1.00 please do so as soon as you can.

Our Spring Sing concert will be held on Thursday, May 31st at 7:00 pm.  Your child needs to bring in a stuffed animal that can be left at school for awhile.  Please bring this in as soon as possible.  Mrs. Smith has requested this so the kids can practice exactly the way they will be performing.

If you are not planning to order your child’s spring pictures please return them to the elementary office!  Thank-you.
