Miss Schultz's Parent Letter

Dear Kindergarten Families,

Our reading month is off to a great start. The kids have almost completed 2 weeks of D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read) time. The majority of them have been consistently choosing books from our classroom library that they can read on their own. It is wonderful to see them excited about their ability to read!

At the language center this week students completed pages Kk, Ll, Mm and Nn in their alphabet books, they made an —ing word family book and they put together short and long vowel sentence puzzles and wrote the sight words from the sentences in baggies of paint.

At the writing center students completed a page in their journal, they made an I play pattern book and they did a rainbow writing activity.

At the math center students put the coins in order from the lowest value to the highest value. They practiced counting pennies, nickels, and dimes in order to get the correct amount of money into labeled piggy banks, and they practiced addition and subtraction problems.

At the theme art center our Mom volunteers helped students learn the Bow-Wow rhyme, play an animal sound game, play a consonant zoo game and make a class animal alphabet book.

Please remember that tomorrow is a dress-up day. Help your child find an outfit that makes them look like they are a tourist.

Also, turn in your book orders. I will order the books on Monday so if you need an extra day I can take the orders on Monday too.

All the students are working really hard on reading, writing, and counting skills. Please read with your child at home and practice the concepts we are focusing on here at school. It is very important that they grasp the concepts of the report card so they have what they need to enter first grade.

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

  1. Can you tell me 3-5 words that are in the —ing word family?
  2. Can you use pennies to make 10 cents?
  3. Can you use nickels to make 25 cents?
  4. Can you use dimes to make 50 cents?

Enjoy the weekend! I think spring may be on its way!

Sincerely,

Miss Schultz
