Miss Schultz's Parent Letter

Thursday, February 9th, 2006

Dear Kindergarten Families,

We have been studying our last 2 letters of the alphabet, Ii and Jj. At the language center students completed an Ii and Jj book, Ii and Jj tongue twisters, and a middle vowel cut-and-paste activity.

At the writing center students practiced writing Ii and Jj, they drew pictures of things beginning with Ii and Jj, they wrote sentences about their pictures and they wrote words beginning with Ii and Jj from around the room.

At the math center students were introduced to the penny. They did a penny search in rice and completed a writing activity. They completed an addition number stories activity, they practiced counting by two’s and they practiced with addition and subtraction flash cards.

We continued our nursery rhyme study with Mary Had a Little Lamb. The kids played a "l" blend game to learn words that have the "l" blend. They rewrote the rhyme with "l" blend words of their choice.

We will be celebrating the Olympics with our very own kid-friendly version of the games. Friday morning is our opening ceremony in the gym and then next week we will have friendly competitions to earn medals. Our class is Italy and I have taught the kids how to say good morning and hello in Italian. They each made an Italy flag to wave during the opening and closing ceremonies. Please be sure to share the Olympics with your child while the events are on television.

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

  1. What sounds do the letters Ii and Jj make?
  2. Can you tell me 3-5 words that begin with the letter Ii? The letter Jj?
  3. How do you say good morning in Italian?
  4. How do you say hello in Italian?

Have a great weekend!!

Sincerely,

Miss Schultz
