Miss Schultz's Parent Letter

Thursday, February 16th, 2006

Dear Kindergarten Families,

This has been a busy week between competing in our Olympic events, celebrating the 100th day of school (Tues.), Valentine’s Day and our normal Literacy Centers!

We have completed our alphabet study and will begin focusing on learning new words, practicing reading strategies and writing more on our own. I combined the language and writing centers this week. Students completed 2 language cut-and-paste activities that dealt with long and short vowels. They drew a picture in their journals and wrote a sentence to describe their picture. They also completed 2 pages in their alphabet books that we are making for review purposes.

At the math center students were introduced to the nickel. They searched for nickels in rice and completed a writing activity. They also completed an addition and subtraction number story activity to continue reinforcing the number facts they have learned.

At the theme art center students learned The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe rhyme. The poem helped them review the digraph’s we have been working on — sh, th, wh, ch and ph as well as some r blend words. They practiced lacing up a paper boot to match the digraph and blend with the correct picture. They also made up their own rhyme by changing 2 digraph and blend words to new words of their choice.

I would like to remind you that there is no school for students on Friday or Monday. Those are reserved for their mid-winter break.

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

  1. Can you tell me a word that begins with the ph digraph? Wh? Ch? Th? Sh?
  2. Can you tell me a word that begins with the br blend? Fr? Tr? Cr? Gr?
  3. What is the value of a penny?
  4. What is the value of a nickel?

Enjoy your weekend!

Sincerely,

Miss Schultz
