Philanthropy :  Inquiring Minds: News and Philanthropy

This unit focuses on philanthropy in current events.  Students analyzed the format of the newspaper and other news sources (internet) to identify acts of philanthropy in the news.  They also looked at their own communities for examples of philanthropy.  We discussed the importance of knowing  what is going on in our community (and world).  Students now recognize that "news" is a service that helps people understand the world and it helps to prepare for the day (or future). We read a story called "Furry News:  How to Make a Newspaper" by Loreen Leedy to help understand the parts of a newspaper.   We were fortunate to have our student-editor and the teacher behind our elementary school newspaper and also a reporter from the local community paper here for a question/answer period.

In Social Studies the 4th graders are learning about current events. The 4th grade went to a web site called Time For Kids. We looked at current events. We were paired in groups and we had to write about an article we thought was interesting. My partner and I wrote about the story Riding to the Rescue. We wrote about Lee Quinones. Lee rode his bike 1,500 miles to raise money for hurricane victims. He started on October 27, 2005 and rode from New York City to Miami Beach. ...Haley M.
