First Grade Parent Letter
September 29, 2005

Dear Parents,

Book orders are due tomorrow.

Enclosed is your child’s "Unit 1 Checking Progress." Last Wednesday students took a math test. The content covered was tally marks, more than, larger number and number writing. Most students had little trouble. If your child has some area(s) of difficulty, then s/he worked one-on-one to correct any incorrect answers. We have begun a new mathematics unit called "Everyday Uses of Numbers." Students will learn about three specific uses of numbers in real-world contexts: the use of numbers in telephone numbers, in telling time, and in counting money. Your child will learn how to interpret the various parts of a telephone number (the area code, the prefix, and the last four digits), how to tell time on the hour, and how to count collections of nickels and pennies. Please practice these skills at home.

Your child will need a coat every day. The weather has been unpredictable. If the weather is cool, then your child will be prepared with a warm coat. We have had a few students with runny noses, sore throats, and earaches.
