First Grade Parent Letter
May 4, 2006

Dear Parents,

Enclosed is your child’s last magazine test and Unit 6 Checking Progress test results.  The magazine test assessed comprehension, phonics/decoding, writing and language.  The class average was 86%.  The Unit 6 Checking Progress assessed time to the nearest five minutes, centimeter measurement, addition, money and name-collection box.  Several students had difficulty with telling time to the nearest five minutes.  This skill was recently introduced.

Our new math unit is called “Geometry and Attributes.”  Students will work with 2-dimensional shapes.  First, students will classify blocks by their shape, color, and size.  Then they will learn to recognize attributes like number of sides and square corners.  Later, they will work with 3-dimensional shapes they will encounter every day.

Our new science unit is vertebrates.  We will visit the distance learning room to view a short movie called “Animal Groups: Beginning Classification.”  Then we will find the five groups: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals in magazines such as the National Geographic to make collages.

Throughout next week your child can create a unique flowerpot for Mother’s Day at any Manistee Public Library branch: Arcadia, Bear Lake, Kaleva, Onekama and Wellston.  Be sure to stop by!

During the month of May, our class is collecting non-perishable items for the local food pantry.  All of the food collected is distributed to families in our area.  Please send in your contributions throughout the month.  Also continue to send in canisters for the P.T.O. such as coffee, Pringles, cottage cheese, infant formula, and etc.

Enclosed are our last book orders: May and June.  They are due on Friday, May 12th.  Please make your check payable to Scholastic Book Club.

Congratulations to Austin!  He was awarded 25 cents for our classroom store for having the highest number on his number scroll.  He had 2,740!!  Enclosed is your child’s number scroll.  All students did nicely.  This was good number pattern practice.
