First Grade Parent Letter March 23, 2005 |
Dear
Parents, Book orders are due tomorrow. Please make your check payable to Scholastic. Next week is spring break. We will return on Monday, April 3rd. When we return, there will be no homework or spelling words for the week. On Thursday we will walk to the Onekama Public Library at 12:30. Thursday evening is parent-teacher conferences from 6-9 p.m. Enclosed is your child's Unit 5 Checking Progress (math test). Students were given the opportunity to fix any errors without support. If they were unable to fix their errors, then they worked one-on-one with me. The test focused on addition, subtraction, place value, and greater than (>), less than (<), equal to (=). Our next math unit is called Developing Fact Power. Knowing the basic facts is as important to mathematics as knowing words by sight is to reading. Your child should start to get a good handle on many addition and subtraction facts by the end of the year. Learning the facts takes practice. It is not necessary to practice for a long time, but it is important to practice often, almost every day. In our new unit students will learn shortcuts that will make it easier to learn the facts. Working with shortcuts will help build fact power. |
For
the next several weeks we will study several science
units. The focus will be on the Earth's features. We
discussed eight features: ocean, lakes, rivers,
mountains, valleys, plains, deserts, and ice caps. The
following units are rocks, vertebrates, and recycling.
This is the perfect time of the year to study science
because we are able to get outside and have a change of
pace. The following dates you may want to add to your calendar:
Warmly, Shantel snieders@manistee.org
